hey all, when mixing and mastering, i play each track on its own, and make all the adjustment to make it sound great like reverb, eq, compression and so on (if it is nessecary) and then check these sounds are ok by using my sterio (set up with speakers properly positionsed and with an eq that gives me what i think is the best sound can produce) my entertainment heaphones (sonys) and my little computer speaker, and my beyerdynamic monitering headphones, all of which i combine with a small sub aswell to double check the sounds.

once all the tracks are at there best i use my beyerdynamics phones to re-eq (if needed to help fit the mix or help cut through) and to mix the song in question.

and i would like to know if a good pair of moniters would really make all the difference in my mixing, as i check the sound through plenty of differnt listening devices anyway and i do use some good mixing headphones..

I don't use monitors, but then my mixes do suck;)

If you can get good results that translate well onto other systems (not just other speakers), then monitors may be an expense you don't need to worry about. However, a good set of monitors in a good room will make it easier to get mixes that translate well across all the major systems around.

No doubt a good monitoring chain will make all the difference in the world, but it won't help much if you don't get decent mixing technique down first. I'd spend fore time worrying about - and PLANNING - how the tracks sound together and less time worrying about how the tracks sound soloed. Unless you have great ears and at least some experience, what sounds perfect soloed will often be much less than perfect for the mix. It's all about finding each track's role in the mix or position on the team, not making it a superstar all on it's own.

Your entire mixing process seems apt to cause a lot of problems. Don't set EQ and effects based on a track being soloed. It's how it sounds with everything else that matters.

Interesting... I usually do stuff in groups. I throw all of the drums on a bus, the vox, guitars, any other instruments, etc, and listen to the busses soloed. From there, I listen to the mix on the whole and adjust accordingly.

I know I need monitors pretty bad.

How do you guys feel about those Rokit monitors?

I have two jugs of milk in the fridge.

One of them is five months old, and the other is brand new.

Should I drink the rotten, stale milk? Or should I drink the good milk?

i have the rokit 5s. love 'em!

Same here.
I finally moved to a computer based setup and listen to these things literally ALL DAY and my mixes are better than ever since I've gotten used to them.

You can get used one's for reall cheap too.
I saw some Rokit 8's on craigslist that were $250 for both of them.

I actually got my Rokit 5's for recording one song for a band. One of the best deals I've ever made. Haha.

Yes, your monitoring system is crucial. I would even go so far as to recommend one build a system from the speakers (and room acoustics) back, instead of them being the last thing on the list. I agree with SouthSIDE Glen and TexRoadkill about mixing technique.
