Do I need a preamp?

Hey guys,

I have 2 SDC overheads for my drumset, an Audix i5 for the snare and an Audix D6 for the bass drum. I'm currently using a MOTU828mk2 for my interface which means I have 2 XLR jacks with preamps for the condensers and 8 TRS inputs at the back of the unit that I was assuming I could use to plug the 2 dynamic mics directly into (they don't need phantom power correct?) My problem is that even at the highest gain, the analog inputs at the back are giving me almost no signal from the dynamic mics. The dynamics work fine when I plug them into the XLR inputs in the front, but that doesn't do me any good as I need those for the overheads which require the phantom power. Do I need a preamp for the other two mics also? Is it because the TRS inputs aren't at the correct level for amplification? If not, any suggestions for what I might be missing, or what I need to purchase? I feel like I've tried everything else.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Those 1/4" trs jacks are line level. The xlr jacks are preamps. The primary function of a preamp is to get mic level up to line level... so, yeah, you need a preamp. DMP3 is a reasonably priced 2 channel preamp. When using a microphone, you always need a preamp. :)

Oh dont suck up:D

OK, Jeff is a scum-sucking wanker! (just kidding)
But- he is correct. If I had those 8 cool line inputs, I would seriously consider an 8-channel preamp such as Focusrite Octopre or M-Audio Octane. That way, you get to use *all* the channels.-Richie

Agree on all accounts. :D

I have a Presonus D8- thats an 8 channel single rack space preamp. I'd consider the Focusrite or the Octane though. I much prefer the pres in my Soundcarft M8 to the D8.

Thanks for the all of the help guys! I went out an temporarily purchased a Presonus bluetube dual preamp (unfortunately neither Guitar Center or SamAsh have a unit that has more than 2 preamps in it! for shame.....) so I could figure out how to use it and set up the mics and such. I think I will be returning it for one of the units with 8 preamps as you had all suggested. Thanks again!
