Do I need 8 art-tubes?

My sound card has 8 i/o's. I have only one art tube presently. I want to use all 8 inputs simultanuosly. What is the most economical way to preamp them all? Is there any software equivalent of harware preamps?

Keyboard input doesn't need preamp, right? As for bass guitar I can hear the sound but it just doesn't generate enough audio signals without preamp.
Thanks in advance.

Your 8 inputs are all line level, so you can plug anything that's putting out line level directly into the card. For everything else, you either need microphone preamps, DI boxes, and so on. It's really as simple as that.

There is no way for software to be a preamp, although there are plugins that model various eq and distortion characteristics of some preamps. This requires that you already have your source recorded though, so it does you no good.

If you want to track 8 microphones, you need 8 channels of mic pre. Inexpensive solutions are things like the ART Tube MP, which you already have, and the m-Audio Audio Buddy (2 channels for $79).

"Spirit M8 or Mackie 1402 should do the trick."

Thank you guys for the advice. How many output does M8 or 1402 have? Never mind, I'll go check that at guitar center later. Thanks again. :-)

The 1402 has 6 onboard preamps, you can get a "direct out" from each preamp via the channel insert by pluging a patch cable into it one click from all the way in.

at $530, its hardly the most economical way to do it......

3 Audio Buddys like S2K mentioned would hit you for $240.....

Id then Treat myself to a Studio Projects VTB-1 for $180.......

and if you are going in with a keyboard into 2 of those inputs you can do without one of the Audio Buddy's......

save the rest for good mics (if you dont have any)....

btw, what soundcard is it?.....
