For rap vocals, would I be better off using a clean pre such as the DMP3 or one with a little more warmth like an EH 12ay7? Ive also heard good things about the Presonus Blue Tube. Im just looking for a pre that would be great with specifically rap vocals, nothing else. Suggestions?

I own both.

Really it depends on your voice and the rest of your signal chain (particularly the mic) but instinctively I'd reach for the 12AY7. I use mine mainly on vocals and vocals is also the one source on which my DMP-3 really doesn't shine (it's great for acoustic instruments).

I should also say I don't record rap or hip hop but that's my opinion on those two pres anyway for what it's worth.

input appreciated... so, you say it really depends on the mic and my voice? I have a rather low voice, not REAL low, and will be using an AT4040 or ADK Hamburg

Yeah that's just a bit of a caveat really, generally speaking the 12AY7 would trump the DMP-3 for vocals everytime but different sources sound better with different combinations of gear. You just never know for sure without actually using the gear in your studio with your voice and the rest of your equipment.

Also the way gear sounds is to an extent subjective so I don't like to recommend things too enthusiastically because even though I like it, it might just not do it for you.

It is a great sounding pre though. ;) :D
