DMP 3 or Audio Buddy

Hey Guys ..... so my friend bought a couple of MXL condensers (990/991)

however i just realised i can't use them with my roland VS880 digital workstation as it isn't phantom powered ...

can any one offer me some advice with regards to these 2 preamps ...

what really is the difference ...and is it worth the extra money to get the DMP 3 ...

From what I've seen the Audio Buddy provides less that 48v phantom power, so it won't work with all mics ... DMP-3 is not THAT much more money, and will give you many more options as time goes by.

lurgan, I don't know all the specific differences, but have heard better things about the DMP3, than the Audio Buddy. I have the Audio Buddy, and it seems to work ok, but have heard it does not provide a true +48 v of phantom, and this may cause some mics to not sound correct. I went to the MAudio website, and the DMP# has a true +48v, but they never say anything about it for the Buddy. I don't know if this is a problem, or not. Just something to look at.

...if budget's the issue, I picked up DMP-2 (s) off of eBay really cheaply - no styley VU meters, but gets the job done....

i own them both.. i originally had the audiobuddy and upgraded to the dmp3. the thing about the audiobuddy is that there's a signal light and a clip light.. other than that, you're on your own. the dmp3 actually has a VU meter so you can more accurately judge your levels. the dmp3 has a hi/lo gain range button and a low cut (75 hz) button, the audiobuddy does not. the dmp3 has a phase button for each channel, the audiobuddy doesn't. plus there's the whole +48v phantom power issue with the audiobuddy (the audiobuddy works fine with a single mxl990, i've got good results out of it).

hope that helps. if it matters, the dmp3 definitely looks more "pro" then the audiobuddy, which looks pretty cheap.

Actually, that helps me a bit as well. I've been wanting an upgrade, and hae been considering the DMP3. I think I'll be getting one soon. Thanks

Thanks guys ...i think i will get the dmp 3 once i save up another few £££

Just as a matter of interest ...will using 2 condenser mics in the dmp 3 have an effect on the amount of phantom power being used ...will 2 condensers work with the dmp 3?

probably a silly question ...but better to be sure...

it'll definitely support 2 condensors. there is, however, a single phantom power switch that activates it for both channels... i doubt that'd hurt a dynamic mic if you had a dynamic and a condensor in the two channels.
