I used a toilet flange on mine. Asthetics could use a version 2.0.

I can't help but ask....

I think you said you spent like $4000 on your preamp and comp...then probably about another $1500 for the U87...
...and you finish it off with a toilet flange and panty hose for your shockmount and pop filters…?

Interesting high-end/low-end dichotomy. :D
I think what’s missing is a piece of duct tape for the final touch. ;)

The U87 was $3,200 near 20 years ago, I'd want at least $5K for it. It's a Stephen Paul modded one, and still has the Record Plant NYC labels on it.

The toilet flange balances it out so I feel worthy of singing through it. :o

$5k on top of the $4k!!!

So you have $9k worth of gear held in check by a toilet flange and some pantyhose!!! :laughings:

Sorry....I can't help but chuckle at that.

very nice and all, but seriously, with the amount of time building it vs. what you get - I'd have shelled out the $30 for a shock mount. Actually, I've paid half that for shock mounts on eBay. There's some silver ones that are exactly the same as on the picture at the top of your site for $15.

I don't know about you, but my time is worth way more than $30 per hour. I'm not going to spend time on a DIY project unless it = what serious money would buy.

$5000 for a mic isn't to much, but $30-$50 for a shock mount IS!

Yeah...I put a couple of eBay links in an earlier post above where you can get them for less than $15 shipped...for a ready-made, decent shockmount.
For that kind of money...I just couldn't see myself spending even 1 hour on a DIY version! :D

I don't know, some times while I'm out in the shop I just like to make things.
It gives me a sense of wellness that I can only get from making something no matter how it turns out.
My me time is priceless ..... but I refuse to have TV or other idiotic control on me so I dream, build and create.

Exactamundo. I do all kinds of DIY things many people would think would be nuts to do. I've always been like that. I can't help it! Plus I get what I want - I haven't seen the mic shock mounts with 4 adjustable two stage pop filters at GF yet - I heard they work really good... but smell funny

And it was really saving precious time in one's life to think it out then type on a computer how one would not 'waste one's time building something that was neither cheaper than nor = to or better than something that could be bought', then post it for the world to see on a thread started by someone who clearly enjoyed making something themselves and left clear instructions on how it was done, just in case someone did fancy making one !

There's alot to be said for democracy and free speech ! :D

Yeah...but hanging on the forums isn't always a waste of time.
There's always at least one entertaining thread to follow, like this one for instance... ;)

No one's slamming the "DIY" mentality.
Like...I built all my own studio furniture/racks because 1.) to buy ready-made quality furniture would have cost a LOT more, and 2.) it would never fit perfectly into the dimensions of my room like my DIY stuff does.

I know some folks like to tinker...but sometimes there’s that "No honey, I don't need a plumber, I can do it myself" mentality that kicks in along with the testosterone :) and then common sense and logic can go out the window, and you end up spending a lot of time and effort just to save a few bucks (sometimes it even ends up costing you more to DIY).
I know...I've been caught in many stupid DIY projects of my own that I eventually wished I never started...but of course, we hang in there TO THE END! :D

The comments on the DIY shockmounts are only saying that they are REAL CHEAP to buy ready-made...and in dinty’s case, it IS a bit ironic-funny that $9000 worth of mic, pre and comp are topped off with a toilet flange and pantyhose DIY shockmount (c’mon, you KNOW it is ironic-funny...we're just poking some fun at him :laughings:)

...but otherwise DIY can be real cool.

Poke all you want buddy.

Now if you'll excuse me I need to do my prostate exam and after that I'm performing a root canal on a tooth that kept me up all night... now where the hell is that Dremel?

Is the Dremel for the prostate exam?

:D

You said you paid $3200 for the U87, but wouldn't take less the $5000 for it.
Would that $5000 include the custom shockmount? :laughings:

Hey...feel free to poke some fun back at me any time you see a good opportunity. :drunk:
