OK, boys. In all my research for what would be the "best gear" for the money, I've found that there really is no such thing. Everyone will give you completely opposing opinions...and eventually one is forced to put them all together, along with doing some homework, and make a decision.

I've finally come to some conclusions:

I do want to record with a computer, but need to make sure I have the power to record up to 16 tracks at a time (16 bit...I have a Layla), and get through a full song without any cut outs.

I want to be able to do some pre-mixing on an external board for ergonomic reasons...I don't like mixing with a mouse.

So, here is where I come to you for more advice. I need to configure a computer system that will be expandable, and at the same time have more than enough power to do the job. I also don't want to spend money on more board than I can use with the Layla setup.

My questions? I'm wondering what type of system you feel would be adequate to record 16 tracks at a time, and how big of a board I could use efficiently with the Layla.

I've also heard many different opinions on software. I've sampled Cakewalk, and it just felt too mickey mouse for me, but...I never got real deep into it. And I haven't tried anything else...

I'm also looking at the Korg Triton for my MIDI workstation and synth. I've currently got a Roland RD-500, so I'll probably just get the smaller keyboard and link up the Roland for the weighted keys/full keyboard.

I know I've covered a lot of stuff, but I welcome input on any of the above.

Thanks again for the great site...it's too bad some things weren't more black and white. It would make this gear buying thing a little easier! (but probably much more boring!)
