Looking for suggestions for getting those EVH, airplane sounding divebombs.I have a Ibanez edge tremolo.I'm gonna try boosting the mids when I jam tonight and see if that helps.Any ideas?

hey if u want to get a cool sounding whammy effect, do the satch scream. play an open b string pinch harmonic and pull up on the bar. Its kind of tricky to get at first but once u get it, it sounds awesome. satch uses two hands to do it, and thats how i do it, but vai (since hes the master) can do it with one hand. also listen to vai's bad horsie. He get his guitar to sound like well a horse. This one isn't that hard just hit a pinch harmonic and do vibrato decending gliss with the bar.

I believe EVH used an octave pedal and lot's of delay. That's why his dive bombs always sounded huge.

There is a preset on the GNX series called "dive bomb" and it does just that! I think it is a mixture of Whammy and delay.

I used to do that trick by playing the big E and the A string at the same time, but I'd let my thumb hang over the top of the fretboard and touch the E string at the 12th fret to get the harmonic.

Does that make sense?

Thanks for the replies.I will try some of the ideas.Tuning isn't a problem.I have a whammy petal, that's not the sound I'm after, a propeller plane is the only way I can explain the sound, with a growl. In Van Halens' version of Pretty Woman, the first dive he does is the sound.Maybe it was timed with the down oscilation of a flanger?Darknail, I'm a Vai and Satch fan too.Vai does a cool trick were he hits his guitar body right next to the bridge and then does a three finger pulloff up high on the g string then repeats a few times.A cool Satch trick is sliding up a string and depressing the bar at the same time, trying to keep the pitch of the note the same. You get a cool warbling effect.
