Anyone have any advice when looking for a distressor for heavy vocals?

Yea.

Um ... find someone who is a dealer for them.

And then buy it.

What Daisy said is spot on. Distressors kick ass as far as versatility goes wihtout having to sacrifice quality. It may not be the one best compressor out there for any given track, but I can not think of a better one for doing a quality job with whatever you throw at it. You can hit those things with 30db of compression and still sound good. If it were me, I would also spend the couple hundred extra for the X version to get the stereo link option and the Brit mod. I don't use the Brit mod as often as I thought I might after owning one for a while, but when I do it makes it worth it:)

Sounds to me like you're under the impression that the term 'distressor' is a generic term for a type of effect......... which is not the case. It refers to a effects unit from Empirical Labs called the Distressor.

Nice catch there fraserhutch, that had not crossed my mind, but we may be inadvertantly leading this poster astray, or at least inadvertently in the right direction:D
