distortion pedal

I have been recording on my laptop by running my guitar through a v-amp and straight into my computer. The v-amp however is a loaner from my dad so I am wondering if there is a program I could download that would make it so I can plug my guitar straight into my laptop? I guess an overdrive pedal would prolly be cheap and easily affordable but I prefer to save my money if there's a freeware program that will do the job just as well. Thanks for any help.
