Hey, I really want to mess with beats form a drummachine in real time. Like, arppegioate them and really mess with them. I have heard and researched the Korg Kaoss pad 3 and ti seems like an option is there any thing else? ANy info would be awesome.

The two basic alternatives are going to be to A: put it through a sequencer's monitoring and mess it up with plugins (this is what many laptop performers do, e.g. Four Tet) or B: some hardware device. For the hardware device, a kaoss pad is about as good as you're going to find for versatility. There are other devices that do certain things better (i.e. a sherman filterbank has better distortion and filters) but for sheer variety the KPs are probably the best.

thank you

thanks man that queestoin was bugging me forever.

If you're looking at realtime beatmangling a'la Exile, Squarepusher, Aphex Twin, you'll need to sample the output of your drum machine and then create some contraptions in either Reaktor (which is what Exile uses) or Max/MSP (which is what Squarepusher (I believe) and Autechre (for sure) use). There is a thread on the NI's Reaktor forum where one of the uber Reaktor programmers (CList) has created a beatmangler that can load up to 4 loops and mess with them in realtime. Certainly worth having a look.

If you're looking to just simply distort/effect them any number of guitar pedals and things like the Kaoss Pad would do. Actually the sampling and resampling capabilities of the Kaoss Pad would probably be quite handy.

get reason :)
it comes with some amazing drum loop processors

Alesis Bitrman

Its quite nice for external mangling.

Also, look into circuitbending.
If you bend something with an input.
You could get some interesting stuff.

(good example...i bent a halloween voice changer thingy.)

the good thing about bending...everything you make...
noone else has it.

Oh...and i 100th the kaoss pad thingy.

Its quite bad ass.

Theyre up to KP3.

But hell...the original KP is great too.

KP3, of course...GREATLY improved.

I like messing up beats. I do it alot. The sickest thing I have ever used for distorted beats was guitar pedal called the Overlord. Its an old tube pedal and really hard to find. But if you ever see one, grab it at any price. Or tell me about it so I can grab it.

An even better thing though is the Steiner Parker, Synthacon VCF. Holy mother of pearl what that thing can do. This is a must have... http://www.cyndustries.com/modules_synthaconfilter.cfm
