While recording my last vocal it was getting distorted when I really pushed the vocal. I have an Alesis 3630(i know ..its cheap). I can't seem to get rid of it. The level on the recorder is below clipping. I don't know why the comp is doing this????help

cuz the alesis has no head room...hence why its cheap hence why its crap...

Are you perhaps using the wrong input level on the 3630?

There's a switch on the back if I remember correctly (+4/-10).

The switch is on -10. Which one should it be? BTW Thanks.

What preamp are you using?

Compressors can also distort if you are trying to make them compress faster then they can handle. Some cheap gear adds distortion just by running a signal through it. I haven't actually used a 3630 so I don't know if that is the case.

I using an ART tube preamp. It's one of those compact units. Now that I come think of it, I haven't changed the tube in the preamp...ever(5 years)! Would have anything to do with it?

might be the tube. i had a 3630 (HAD HAD HAD), but i never got any funky distortion out of it.....i tried, lordy i tried. Are you talking about the Tube MP or TPS? Change the tube and let us know.

I'm not sure of the unbalanced/balanced level issue. But I do agree that compressors often distort when the attack/release settings are not set properly. If I were you, I would try a slower attack time (larger number) and/or slower release time (larger number).

funny, i clicked on this thread cause i thought you needed help distorting a vocal track with a compressor. which is a fun, but somewhat difficult thing to do depending on the compressor.

seems like you are getting along well without my help.
