Use a Footswitch
The suggestion of an single fader source is great. I currently use a PreSonus Faderport which has a footswitch input which ultimately gives you the ability to "Punch in" at any time an awesome guitar line (or vocal... or anything else for that matter). My main instrument is keys, and depending on your set-up, if you are using a midi keyboard, most come standard with the same "Footswitch" ability as do most midi interfaces. Midi interfaces are very affordable these days and the nice thing about using a footswitch is, that even though they are "hardwired" to your interface... you can easily extend them with a standard mono 1/4" male to 1/4" female cable. Also, for guitarists and keyboardists... the ability to punch in and out without using your hands keeps you at the ready at any time to "lay down that solo". Hope this helps.
