Dispute with monitors.

Ok. Im young and a bit unexperienced and I need to clear up some issues with monitors. I talked to a producer recently and he suggested monitors were really not that reliable because you mix through them and get a completely different sound when you play the music elsewhere (home stereo system, car, etc.). He suggested I'd purchase a reliable sound system that I could mix with ... my friend said monitors weren't worthless and you gotta look for the things that sound ugly with them so u can fix them.

I need a reliable mixing system or monitors.
what do u guys suggest? stick with some headphones and my currenct 2 sets of speakers I gotta tangle between to mix 'til I run into some home stereo speakers worth the cash, or start saving up for some monitors?

What kind of producer was he?

Real Estate? Amateur Porn film producer?

Whatever he was, he clearly WASN'T a music producer!!!! Yikes!!!!! :eek:

ace516 - get yourself some proper studio monitors and don't listen to these self-proclaimed "praduzrs"....
 
Spend a little time here reading/searching monitor related threads and you'll soon realize that you need a pair of nearfield studio monitors. Headphones and normal stereo speakers won't cut it. Monitors allow you to hear the music as it's recorded -- warts and all. It'll take some time to train your ears to mix properly using whatever brand of monitors you might buy so that your music will sound right on various stereo systems, but eventually you'll learn to "translate" properly. And just what system is reliable? I have yet to hear a system that sounds like everyone elses. Since that isn't possible, why not get a set of speakers that don't fatigue you and allow you to hear what is really going on? I would die if I had to work 12-16 hour sessions with home speakers:( I would never be able to hear the same way again. That being said, it is good to have alternate systems available for quick referencing, but never actual mixing.
 
Dude that guys on crack...dont listen to him...go get a nice set of monitors with a flat frequency response...there is a reason its like that and there is a reason that professionals use them....because thats the right way to do it...!
