I finally got a chance to do some recording; compared to the SB I was using before, it is great. The preamps and DA converters are very quiet, noise from the unit itself doesn't become apparent until the gain is set to the 52 to 75 db range, which is quite alot of amplification.
A couple things that get to me: the eqs and the compressors are only available on the input tracks, making it rather difficult to add them to already recorded tracks. You can get around this, by looping the digital i/o, but that can be (and is) a pain. Also, none of the dsp effects are available in 96khz sampling mode.
The ability to make presets is useful, they are available for every component, as well as globally... too bad there aren't any factory presets.
One thing I like on the control panel: on the inputs, it gives the exact decibel level of the peak, this is useful for setting the compressor.
As for sturdiness, the pci card is nice and solid, and it's the heaviest pci card that I've ever seen, due to the shielding. The break-out box, about 8.5 inches deep by 6.5 across, has a good rugged feel to it. My only complaint is the jacks feel a bit rough, it seems to take a bit more effort than it should to insert a 1/4 inch plug (especially the outputs)... then again, they might just need to be broken in a bit.
