Mostly because its a flimsy, thin preamp signal. It's going to be hard to get a good sound with just that (unless that's the sound you're going for.) Get yourself a real tube amp, a Shure SM57 and a decent Mic Preamp. There's no substitute for the interplay between saturated power tubes, a good speaker, the air and a mic. If you really like the flexibility of the Digitech, try using it as the preamp and send it into something with real power tubes. Crank the volume on the tube amp and you'll have the high gain mayhem you're looking for.

I have yet to find a digital box that can match the tone/feel of my analog guitar rig through a miced cab.

Before I bought my Roland GP-16 I had a Digitech GSP. Actually I had 4 of 'em, and each one had a different problem.

I had to shell out a few more bucks for the Roland, but it's been trouble free.

I have gotten some decent direct sounds through my Roland by rolling off the highs at 7-8Khz, and the lows around 75hz or so.

I still prefer to mic my amps though.

I definitely agree with the last posts. But a couple questions first if you aren't quite ready to run out and buy an amp and a mic.

Are you using the cabinet simulators?

Have you messed with the EQ?

I've gotten some good sounds with one of these through an amp & headphones- though the clean tones were pretty weak.
