Firepod

I have a Presonus Firepod 8 mic input interface connected to my computer through firewire, and Cuebase software.
I've been playing the guitar for a long time, but this is the first time I've tried to record anything.
My guitar is a Ibanez RG 220 B, and the distortion pedal I love to use is the digitech metalmaster.
When I record clean, there is no hiss whatsoever, it sounds beautiful.
But when I turn the dirt on, theres a hiss that would wake the dead.
I don't mic, I just plug straight into the firepod using the Mixer output on the pedal.
Would it be best to invest in a sound gate, because Cuebases Gate just blows.
Any help to remove this would be great.

Are you using a plug in power supply or a battery in the pedal?

Power supply, I also am not able to reduce the hiss in my Crate head, the grunge channel just has a hiss that unbelievable!

or will I get hiss from all high gain distortions, when I play live, its not really a big deal, cause the other sounds cover the hiss, but recording it is really being a pain in the neck!

Those power supplies are notorious noise makers. Try putting a battery in the pedal instead when you're recording.
