digital multitracker help!

I will be purchasing a digital 8 track soon. The trouble is, I cant decide what to get. It seems to me that the Fostex VF 08 is a hard deal to beat. Tascam's closest competition is the 788 which is about $300 more and I don't really see what you get for it. The Fostex VF 80 looks to have a bigger hard drive but loses some of the features. Can someone shed some light? i'd like to keep the purchase under $800.

Do you have a computer or any other equipment to use with a recorder or are you starting from scratch?
