I agree with gridge that GoldWave is the easiest to use, although, I am not very impressed with it's dynamic processing at this point. Version 4.11 does have a Compressor/Expander, but I think you need a degree in GoldWaveology to figure out how to set the thing.
The cut and paste stuff is excellent, the eq's are accurate and easy to use. The effects all work very well. No scrolling screen, but that is only a minor annoyance. Basically, it is a very sound software for mastering.

I have a sony MDMX4 and a sony MDS JE520. Is this softwear all I'll need to be able to produce good quality demos and maybe some live performances?
Oh yeah I forgot I've got Voyetra. Will I find this helpful? From some of the other posts, I take it, people are not that impressed with it.
