Digi 002 Rack Drum Recording Help

I just purchased a bunch of new equipment. My goal is to be able to mic and record a full drum kit. I bought a set of drum mics and a digi 002 rack in hopes of doing so. Problem is I can only use 4 imputs on the digi at once. I'm looking for someone to give me a clue to what i need to purchase or do in order to hook up at least 8 mics and have preferably seperate tracks for each mic. Do in need an 8 channel pre-amp or am I just SOL and its not gonna happen. Please help a noob out! Thanks.

to use 8 microphones...you need 8 preamps

you can buy them separately or in units of 8
you can buy a mixer that has direct outs/inserts and run them from the mixer to the 002...or mix the drums on the mixer and just take the stereo outs of the mixer
or get something cheap like the Behringer ADA8000 and use the digital ins of the 002

Check out the mackie 800r. 8 good pre's lightpiped in to your 002. Select adat as your inputs on your mix window 1-8 and then you have 4 more pres for whatever and 4 input for say a bass/guitar with a direct box or a higher end effect processor with your spdif in. 17 inputs all together. BTW the 800r's first 2 channels are designed for overhead mics for a kit. I use mine for drums specificly.

Not sure if that was a typo. But, to to be clear, you can actually have 18 inputs on a Digi-002. 8 analog (of which 4 are mic/line and 4 are just line), 8 via ADAT lightpipe, and 2 via the coaxial S/PDIF.

If you're just starting I'd go with the Behringer ada8000 as mentioned earlier. It's not the greatest but it is one of behri's better units. You can dedicate your overheads, snare and kick to the slightly better 002r pre's and just use the ada8000 for toms and extra's. Eventually you can get some really nice pre's for the 4 ins (analog 5-8) when you get the money.
