so I did some research and found that the firebox would suffice for the price range I was working with.... then I popped it out of thebox and had to turn the gain up alllll the way to get any mic feed. are the pres just shot or it this normal?

Is it a condenser microphone? and is the phantom power switch on?
If not --epic fail --send it back and get another one.

yes condenser yes phantom power. too broke to get another one...such a setback for . not complaining just venting I guesss....ahhhhh!

Are you using a good mic cable?
And is this unit under warranty?

my mic cable is pretty low quality and very long. and no warranty on my firebox

I am assuming that the volume is turned up on the software mixer, have you tried the +12 option on the settings window?

If the mic cable is cheap their could be a phantom power problem.

+12 optio? is it on the firebox software mixer? I use studio one to record and only use thatmixer.. and a good mic cabl could help eh?

My first comment is "Have you read the manual?" the manual has all the information you need for this set up. The manual is a free download here.

Click on the "Firebox control panel" icon. There you find the +12 dB input level boost option. If you are using windows the sample rate, clock source & latency settings are there also, different on mac.

It may not be the cause of your problem, but I have learnt the hard way that that good mic cables are needed when using phantom. By the way you are using an xlr to xlr lead not a XLR to jack plug lead?

Cheers
Alan

you're right the +12 isn't a solution but does help alot!! and I will invest in a Gotham xlr cable soon I suppose...
