just a quick question,

i am using a bass guitar plugin (ampeg) to record my bass. i am using a presonus firestudio project as my interface. I plug directly into one of the channels but notice that when i record the volume is quite low, even though my interface and daw are getting plenty of signal. do i need to DI first?

i dont have this problem when using guitar rig

thanks

Is there an output volume control on the plugin?

I'm not sure I understand the question.

The volume of what is quite low? (the recording level, the monitoring volume, the playback volume, the volume coming out of the plugin, etc...)

Define low. It's possible that the volume of everything around it is too high and the bass is actually right. Where are the meters hitting?

the volume of the bass is to low coming from the plugin, the plugn has and output level but this causes the track to clip if i turn it up.

do i not need a DI box to increase the level (i dont know the specifics of DIing)

i think maybe you are correct in saying that everything else may be a bit too high, i will give it another mix.

thanks for the feedback

The only way for something to be 'quiet' and clip at the same time is for the tone to be such that it doesn't stick out of the mix. It might not be sticking out because there are way too many lows that your monitors can not reproduce, or everything else is the mix is really bright and overly loud.

I'm just guessing, but the most common problem is that the other instruments are way too loud and there isn't enough headroom to get the bass heard without clipping.

Start the mix over with the drums peaking areoun -6 to -4dbfs. Then bring the bass up so that it works well with the drums. Then turn the guitars up so they sound good in context. Then add vocals, solos and everything else.
