DI-box

Hello! I am looking for some decent DI-boxes.
The signalchain looks like this:

stagepiano > DI-box > mixing console

The DI-box should have TELE in and XLR out and cost max $200.

Will a DI-box be affected if I connect it to the XLR connection in the mixer and turn on the phantom power?

Both Horizon and Whirlwind make good direct boxes. We have a number of both at Church for various instruments, and they work well.

You can generally find the Whirlwind EDB1 units for about $20 each on EBay.

I think he means "TRS", as I doubt his stagepiano has a telephone output.

Phantom is for mics, you don't need to use it on synths.

Also, do you need one DI, or two for stereo?
 
Oh...whoops. 1/4 jacks are still called telephone plugs in some places. I was mostly wondering if he meant he wanted a guitar input.

And the phantom power isn't for the keyboard, it's for the mic. But the mixing console only have "phantom of/off". So, every XLR connection get's the phantompower. Including the DI-box. Will it be affected?

And yes, TELE in means TRS in. Excuse my swedish... it's not a telephone in. =)
 
Are there any direct boxes that are 1/4" in and out? If I wanted to record a bass and all it had a an XLR out the only thing I could hook it up to would be a mic input (???).

Like Ed said, there are many pretty inexpensive DIs that will do the job. In any case, check ebay.

If you really need stereo, get two singles, or Whirlwind makes a dual DI that is nice. If you don't, check out the Radial JDI. It will take L and R and sum them to mono. It's spendy ($175) but a fantastic DI.

Phantom power won't bother DIs.
 
If you would like a nice clean signal, I would recommend an active DI box like the Countryman or BSS DI boxes. They both use 9volt batteries to supply power to them. Last year I bought 2 BSS DI 's to replace the passive Whirlwinds that had died on me. The BSS will even use the phantom power from your mixer instead of a battery
 
I've got a Countryman (type 85) and i love it. very nice DI and it's built like a tank. you could certainly do a lot worse.

That is what a direct box is for. It changes the signal from line level to mic level. For your bass, you can just plug it into your line in.

hey billythekid, i have several countryman di's like the one described above, and i am actually selling one if you're interested. they are excellent, and definitely a BIG cut above the whirlwind and horizon di's in terms of clarity and headroom. the radial di's are excellent as well, but a bit pricier.
