DI box question?

I was planning on? advised too use a DI box when recording bass/ guitar tracks for my current cd / project .. so that in the mixdown or later in the project if I see I need a different or better guitar or bass track It will be possible to run the Di track which was recorded similtaneously with my guitar or bass track through a pod or similar plug in ... question is whats the DI do to the signal ??? why couldnt i use a line out on the amp(s) or mixer to acheive the same thing ?? just wondering ?

The line out of your amp is after the preamp section of the amp. The idea behind reamping is getting just the raw guitar.
