ok, i am really having fun with recording and everything involved with it. but the last few weeks i have been working on getting a decent guitar sound, and i have a huge problem that i cant get fixed whatever i try, and i really really hope someone can explain this to me:

everytime i try, i have more or less of this squeaky, bright, horrible noise on my track :(

heres a very short mp3 clip of one of my test recordings, for u to see what i mean (only 70 kb..) - u hear it well between 0:02 and 0:04..

i want a really trebled sound, and this is just a test after all, not exactly the sound i want.. (so no critics on that please lol)

i record my squier (0.10 ernie ball strings, 0.60 pick), using the korg ax100g pedal ("us hi-gain" amp modulation, trebled up a bit), and mic the signal off the small peavey rage 158 (all i got) with a sm57.

it must b some noise is created when the pick hits the strings (yea that sounds dumb but u know what i mean..)
heres what i tried:
- almost every mic position possible
- playing around with the volumes (on the guitar, the pedal, and the amp)
- EQing the amp instead of the pedal
- using different picks
- using the even thinner 0.09 strings (which was slightly worse)
- playing as accurate as possible (of course, i mean i'm anything but a professional, but i play alot, since a year..)

PLEASE help!
because right now the fun of recording my fav instrument is over before it started! :(

Sounds like a cold solder joint somewhere in your signal chain to me.

if that was a serious reply, please explain it to me, as i lack english skills and therefore didnt understand it well.. if it was not (coming that that conclusion when i look at the post that followed), why r u spoiling my thread with sarcasm? i mentioned that the sound clip is crap sounding and not the sound i want, the subject is something different
sorry if i misunderstood and it was a serious reply.

I'm not being mean at all, or sarcastic.

I have the same problem here with my Meekbox. I have an RTA number to send it back but haven't got around to it yet.

A cold solder is a joint that is failing. Could be in a cable, could be in your stompbox, could be in the amp, could be in your guitar.

I doubt it's a mic problem. Do you have weird clicks like that singing into your mic??? I'd start by eleminating THAT and move on to the guitar.

If you hear that sound playing without micing the track then it's in the guitar chain for sure.

I really don't think it's digital clipping...........

Good luck.

it means that one of the pieces of your equipment is fucked (put bluntly). Try taking things out of your signal chain, and seeing what happens. It may well be in your guitar or amp (which is really not cool). I'm guessing you don't know how to use a soldering iron, so take whatever the guilty piece of equipment is to a tech.

That's the explanation of a "cold solder joint". I honestly don't know if that's even the problem.

thanks, c7sus and AcidRain, for the explanation :)

i can say for sure, that it is not the mic, and not digital clipping.. it must be something "physical" having to do with the strings, pick or whatever.

what i dont get is, why no one else seems to have this problem! (searched the board before posting)

one more thing i should mention: i also own a real fender, but that scratch sound is STILL there, no change..

about the cold solder joint possibility: i tried playing directly into my amp and micing it, as well as recording the line-out of my effect pedal, it leaves me with that noise either way!!

°cries°

what do you have your mic plugged into? What is your recording medium?

rpe

mic plugged into behringer ub-1204, fed to a waveterminal 2496 (soundcard)

but my gear is alright, everything else i'm micing works fine :\

man i dont get that.. i was thinking that its a common problem.. i mean its not like i would use anything "unusual" or whatever.. neither on the instrument side, nor on the recording side.

but thanks alot for ur help man i really appreaciate it :)

well i tried it again today, using different cables and trying everything.. its just a noise that the pick creates, no matter how soft or hard i play, it is always there (even when i play clean, directly into the soundcard..)

i really dont understand why i am the only one with this problem.

Just a thought...

Have you tried adjusting your pickups? They could be too close to the strings causing unwanted noise.

Other than that, my non-expert opinion is there is something wrong with the amp.

Does it make this noise when you play on the clean channel?

Have you tried adjusting your pickups?
tried that today, doesnt make any difference :(

Does it make this noise when you play on the clean channel?
yes, just not to the extent like playing with distortion..
but it also makes it when i dont use the amp..

i'm really sorry for bringing the thread up again, just still hoping to get more info :(

Did you, by any chance, raise your pickups or pole pieces?

Have you lowered your bridge?
