It's the smell..
Ok, I've been kicking around an idea for years as a tribute to one of my favorite jazz artists, Pat Metheny. I listened to tons of his stuff in the 80's and 90's...owned every album, some still survive in vinyl.:D Most of my writing in the last decade has been heavily influenced by him and his pianist, Lyle Mays.

So, here's the tune. Letter To Pat.

Something's really bugging me about this mix. It seems to be alternately too intimate then too distant, but I can't really put my finger on it. Real drum tracks are in the works and maybe that will help center it somewhat but I thought I'd post this up as a proof of concept if nothing else. But please, help me figure out what's missing in the mix...You know the feeling you get when you're leaning back in a chair and almost fall over backwards? That's how this mix makes me feel.

The mix. Bass L, Lead guit slightly L...

The only thing I find nitworthy in the mix is that it seems biased left. I switched phone sides, and it seemed biased right. Are levels in the mixdown roughly equal?

Maybe you intend that...more of a live setup, intimate, with instruments across the field more realistically?

I might try bowing to convention...moving bass closer to CTR...guit dead CTR....and see how I like it.

I have some editing and ambience suggestions which I'll hold in abeyance...cuz that's not what you axed.

Real nice sounds, arrangement and playing.

That is weird. I donned some phones and you're right. The bass lays left which is weird since it's mono. The levels are pretty much even +/- 3 or 4 db as stereo material bounces around abit from the pads and drum kit.
Fire away, Jeff. I've got alot of respect for your musicianship and value your notions regardless.

NOt bad TB.

Only thing that really jumped out at me was that guitar picking part kinda hits you in the face?

Its more present then maybe it should be?

I'm not familiar with any of that genere so that my be a standard place for it to be placed, It just really jumped at me when it came around?

Other then that id be stoked ot hear the jam with some real drums...

:drunk:

Man, this is beautiful......
A beach on a warm late afternoon, staring out at the ocean, that's the feeling it gives me.
My only nit would be the drums, they sound a bit "boxed" and thin. But you're gonna have real ones. I'm sure that's gonna make a big difference.
I bow my head to real class musicians.

Joey :):):):)

That was one thing. I was expecting the signature Metheny delay pinging around [ambience more like, or able to compete with the flute]...

Editing: some of the guitar notes are not quite likkedy with the piano...late or early...easy fix. And it's on the head....so I think it should all slam together...unlike a solo.

There's one section...after the second verse, I think...where the dual melody kinda spills apart...heading for the C section. It hit my ears like an error. Maybe just try editing one of the , apparently, improved lines to let the other line call the tune at the moment, without the scrum of notes...a few bars, IIRC. I'll nail it in time, if you need.

Missing, is the deft Pat solo. :^)

I'm pinning alot on those drum tracks...I hope they help give this abit more energy and help the mix and soundfield gel just a little bit. Thanks for the comments and the insight. I appreciate it.

Pat's sound is pretty difficult to simulate absent a synclavier and a butt-load of ability.:D I've got a few more toys to throw at the guit track..but I don't know how close I can get....Pat's got that sitary-laced sound pretty wrapped up. I've not heard anyone else even attempt it. Vance plays very similar to Pat in that he can use space very tastefully and then melt your face off with a run from the blue. He's pretty lethargic on this take tho.:o

I think I'll let this breath for the weekend and maybe retrack the windflute line and see if I can't line up with the guit better and maybe do a bit of time edits on the guit track.... Good points, all. Thanks, amigo.

Ya know... The only experience I have with Smooth Jazz is with the likes of Sam Cardon and Kurt Bestor, and I have no idea how they relate to others in the same genre.... (or even if they are) But I gotta say.. I love listening to their stuff.

This stuff sounds great. Being a drummer, I'm noticing a lot of places where the intro / outros of the flute / guitars aren't spot-on, or at least inconsistent. That could be easily helped.

I love the feel of where this could go. I don't really know who Pat Metheny is, but I sure do like this song!

I'll join in the waiting line of wanting to know how this sounds like with real drums. I'd like to say I'd play them, but this type of groove might be out of my league... :)

Great tune.

NICE! except for the lack of saxophone I have no nits.
:D

I don't care about it leaning left much ...... I like stuff where instruments are actually panned but that's probably just 'cause of too much acid in college.
:)
