Hi!

I´m going to use my Iriver H120 for recording sounds in different atmospheres, sometimes very quiet sounds (if u excuse the expression, dont think its correct english)

I think I might have to use an preamp and have been looking some on the Denecke AD20. Has anyone got any experience with that one? How is the sound A/D converters, are there phantompower, and most important of all, HOW POWERFUL IS IT?? Will it be enought to amplify my H120?

Thanks for your reply

The Denecke AD-20 is a microphone pre-amp and 20 bit, 44.1 kHz A/D converter. It does not supply phantom power. Denecke makes the "companion" PS-2 which is dual 48 v phantom power supply. Both of these units have been embraced by ambient/ field recordists. For portablity, they both run on standard 9v batteries, they can't be beat. The AD-20 can provide 48 db of clean gain for microphones. The "digi-moded" Edirol UA-5 has gained ground on the Denecke units as the price for the UA-5 has plummeted on eBay, where they can be found regularly for less than $200. I have used both units and prefer the sound of the UA-5, but have recently re-purchased both Denecke units because they are smaller and a bit easier to power in the field. I can also use the PS-2 as a phantom power supply for some homemade pre-amps I built. I found a very good deal though, <$175, for the PS-2 and AD-20.
