A few months ago I picked up a version of Home Studio 2XL. As I'm digging deeper into it, I'm finding some of the audio effects (PG, Sony, etc.) have a "DEMO EXPIRED" message on the respective windows that pop up.

What's going on here? I can still use all the Cakewalk Effects just fine...?

Some of the components obviously have a time-limited trial period, and its run out!

I figured as much, but does anybody know how to "restart" them? I've looked at the CW website with no luck...

Most demos that expire have to be uninstalled completely, then re-installed. (Often, registry items get stored for demo products that help mark the time-limit, so you have to uninstall the s/w to clear them out, allowing it to be re-installed fresh - with fresh registry data)

Bear,
the thing that was weird about this was it hasn't worked since day one...

Then maybe those 3rd party components aren't intended "demoable"?!? (they may be simply bundled as part of the the full-version of the s/w, and due to time/money/convenience are not revmoed for the demo versions... I'm guessing here)

:( I downloaded the patch and installed it and I'm still getting the same message on the windows. From teh CW site, they say this patch fixes a warning message that reads:

this beta version has expired, please destroy it, in accordance with you beta test site agreement

Which isn't exactly what I'm getting. I get these big red letters DEMO EXPIRED right on the windows of the various audio effects.

Any other thoughts guys?

Punkin,

Here's an example:

I'll highlight a portion of a track -> Audio Effects -> PG -> Five Band EQ

- Then when the Five Band EQ pops up, where the frequencies should be shown at the bottom, I get DEMO EXPIRED

Any and all of the PG plugins have that DEMO EXPIRED message...

???

I wasn't aware that Cakewalk included demo versions of PG and Sony plugins with Home Studio 2XL.

Did you install them off of the HS installation disk?

If you did, did they say DEMO or EVALUATION VERSION on them when you installed them?

If they were installed as either of the above, did you buy and register them yet?

The HS plugin patch only related to Cakewalk's own plugins right?

There's No Big Mystery Here...

It seems to me that you probably have had demo versions of PG Power Tracks and a Sony product (Acid, Sound Forge, Vegas) installed on your computer at some point, and that the demo version of those plugins that installed with them are still listed in your computer's registry, and therefore showing up in HS's plugin list, but they were demo versions, and the time has expired. If you want those plugins to work, you would have to buy the programs that they came with.

Ummmm....

In the past I had Cakewalk Music Creator on this PC, but have since removed it. And I think I downloaded Power Tracks (I think that's what it was called) but also removed it. I'm about 99% sure the only thing left on my PC is what came on the disks with HS.

So these are plugins from other programs??? No clue now, but does that mean I can install other plugins? How do you get those? Do I sound dumb?

thats one of the best featueres of a program like cakewalk HS, is that you can use lots of 3rd party plug ins. here are some good ones: http://www.kvraudio.com/get.php

as far as your demos go, you siad that you registered a month ago? well maybe the demos were a month trial and have run out. those demos are usually hurting anyways, with crippled features. you can find awsome free vst and dx plugins on the internet.

So I just download these plugins and put them in my "shared plugins" folder and then I'm off to the races? I'm such a newbie...

Holy Cow!!!

I just downloaded something called FreeVerb or something like that, and substituted it for the CW Verb I'd been using... almost sounds like my old Lexicon box...

Are there any threads here on what Plugins are best, or sound most like xyz rack gear etc.?

Now to get those expired demos off my menus...

ha. there really is a whole heap of plugins available. i like the software instruments like vst-i and dx-i, you can find some pretty cool softsynths for free on the internet. i rmemeber if you logged into the cakewalk website tey wre giving some away.

yeah there are threads all over the place theres been a thread about best plugins in the cool edit pro forum (i dont remember if cakewalk excepts direct x or vst..or both or somthing else) (free/or not) going on for forever....just google for plugins and what type of file you want:
ex: (free) vst plugins
