Can headphones be powered through the Delta 44's outputs unamped? The pair of headphones I would be using with the system are Ultrasone HFI-650 Trackmasters, which are rated at 75 ohm.

far better idea is to send delta out to a hifi receiver or amp and plug phones into that imho. imho keep on plugging and unplugging phones into sound cards is not a good idea. you need proper buffered outputs made for phones.
just my 2 cents.

just to clarify your last statement, would I risk damaging the headphones or sound card by directly plugging into the sound card line outs?

you probably risk damaging the sound card. heres the scenario.
ive seen within my circle problems crop up like this.
if the computer is on and active, and the sound card is fired up as well
plugging and unplugging phones from my electronics background can lead in some cases - how can i describe this in laymans term to "jolts".
now it really depends if the engineers built protection circuitry into the output of the delta sound card and how deep that protection is in
electronics terms.
what i do is connect my cabling ONCE when i install the sound card,
then i leave it alone. ie; the cabling for input and ourtput.
and i never muck around with it while the computer is fired up.
so ive never had a sound card blow up on me.
people i know who have done this have had problems.
so in conclusion for SAFETY FIRST. dont plug phones into the output of the soundcard. its not proper practice anyway.
plug the phones into something the sound card is feeding like a amp or receiver. ie: stereo line out from sound card to stereo line in of amp or receiver with a headphone jack.

While it is wise to change any connections while in an un-powered state, I will add that I've done it many times and have suffered no ill effect.
When dealing with an input, be certain to have all your gain staging set to INF (turned all the way down).
Likewise with outputs, turn the output of your devices all the way down prior to making any connection.
Grated, constantly plugging and unplugging can and will wear the contacts of the inputs/outputs though.
In regard to your Delta 44's outputs .... you are aware that the 4 outputs are Mono right?
You won't get a stereo signal out of just one of the outputs.
Also, you wont get a very good signal to your headphone directly off of the outputs.
You would do better by using two of the outputs to send the stereo signal to a HiFi stereo with a headphone output (like had been mentioned) or use a cheap dedicated headphone amp such as this one using an insert cable to get two of the mono outputs to a single stereo input.

I've been monitoring my recording via pc speakers (not bad at least it's surround) and would like to monitor using headphones....I'm getting that delta 44 next week.....so If 2 people (me singing and someone else monitoring, wanted to use 2 sets of phones then I'd need the ART head amp?

I usually go out to a stereo then use headphones from there..
Though I also go out from the Delta,
To the "tape-in" of my mixing board and monitor from there...
Much better clarity than the Stereo.

Using just ONE mixer (Yamaha MG12/4), can I record an overdub (through the mixer's preamps) while listening to the existing track (using the same mixer's headphones out) at the same time? Or would I need an additional mixer just for monitoring?

In other words:

1. Record a track: Mic => Mixer => Delta 44
2. Send recorded track back to Mixer
3. Record second track repeating step 1 while listening to already recorded track through headphones out on mixer.

I'm sure there is a way...
I've never tried... As I never overdub...
I just go the stereo route to moniter,
When I record subsequent parts...
Which isn't too often.

ive covered this many times. my advice use the mg for mics and send sound card line out to a proper headphone monitoring amp ior stereo hifi.
this is the way i do it.
