Any significant difference in sound quality with the Codecs versus the AKM converters?

sooo waay confused on this codec thing
p.s.: I'd like to test the actual signal-noise ratio once it's hooked to some preampage (and also alone), can anyone specify the easiest way to do that right now? (I can't find my RCA cables to hook up what I have out of boxes

Codecs. Kind of sounds like a breath-freshening mint.
Codecs . . . a cheaper alternative to A/D conversion, AND it leaves you with minty-fresh breath.
