Delayed sound reaction to MIDI trigger

Hello,

System:

Athlon 64 3400+
1 Gig Ram
E-MU 1820m

I've got my drum machine (sr16) hooked to my emu and am trying to trigger midi sounds in sonar 4. The sound triggers but it is a half a second after I press the pad. I thought that it might just be my sr16 so I tried it using an old keyboard as a trigger. Same thing. Any ideas?

What you've got hold of there is a common phenom known as 'latency'.

It's the subject of many many many articles (like in this months EQ) but the commonest solution is to set your mixer to monitor the input side --- meaning the SR16 sounds --- for tracking, then once the midi notes are in Sonar you can route them anywhere you choose.

You don't mention a mixer in your gear list --- I recommend one of these because you're not going to be recording anything thru it and it will be useful in years to come because there's always a use for a small mixer.
