I know, I know.... it depends on what you want: clean with looooong delay times or warm and short.

Me personally... I like analog delay.

After being in the market for a delay pedal for some time now, it's become obvious that the analog delay market is a market sorely in need of a product. The "line" is that the bucket-brigade chips are no longer made. Now 20-30 year old DM-2 or AD-9 are selling for $175 on Ebay. Maxon just released an AD-9 re-issue that lists for $400!! All other Maxon analog delays have been discontinued (due to rarity of chips, they say.) A used Aqua Puss will also set you back $400 if you can find one.

The reviews I've read are not that great for the Line6 modeler.

So, what is everybody doing for delay? Going digital? Using the Line6 modeler? Going without?

i may pick up a DL4, heard alot of good things about it. I'm choosing between that and a Memory Man deluxe. Personally i'd prefer a tape echo but i don't have that kind of dough :(

I use a Korg SDD 2000. It's digital, and virtually an antique. I think I bought it in 1982.

If I was looking for a delay for live today, I would go with a Roland Space Echo 501. Great delay and a nice chorus, too. Failing that, the 201 would work, but they have some problems handling a line-level signal on an FX loop.

For recording, gotta have digital. (and the usual YMMV disclaimer)

My trusty BOSS VF-1 multi effects, I use it for everything, it kicks ass.....

For true tape delay, find a cheap reel to reel player at a flea market. I used to have one that I would hook up to my Portastudio and by monitoring the play and record head I got sweet delay. By changing the tape speed I got different lengths of delay. It's hardly live-friendly but it sounded pretty good.

Sorry, it's been too long and I don't remember exactly how I had it hooked up, but I know it works. And you can usually find the cheap stereo reel to reels for under $50.

Nice! Great idea, i'll have to go try that..next flea market :D
