Well truthfully, if you understand compression, you will understand de-essing. You gotta take baby steps before you can run... :)

Really it is simple. You use the sidechains Send to go to the input of the EQ, then the EQ's output to the sidechains Return.

You "exxagerate" the frequency you want to de-ess on the EQ, then set the compressor to effectively compress that signal.

But actually, you are not "just" compressing that signal, you are compressing the whole part, but in effect, making the compressor responsive to that frequency only. This can be usefull, but is mostly overrated. I have only found one singer that I worked with that needed a de-esser. Usually, a little EQ tweek at that frequency will produce nice results. De-essers are more appropriate when all else fails, and only when there is no chance of just redoing the recording and actually placing the mic right to avoid the offending frequency.

De-ess after recording. It is generally not a very good idea to do ANY signal processing while tracking unless there is no other way to control what you want to control.

Good luck.

I need to know how to use a simple compressor using side chains and an external EQ to make a DeEsser, and what settings to use on both the eq and compressor. Any information on the hook up and wheither I need to use the DeEsser during tracking or mix down would be appreciated. Thanks, any help would be appreciated
