I've decided to go ahead and purchase the firebox next week. I wanna go ahead and install the firewire card this week. Is there a particular firewire card that i would need? Reason i ask is because i've heard some people get the firebox without an ac adaptor and need a powered firewire card. I was gonna get a card from walmart since it's right up the road, or either office depot. What is a good firewire card to get that's inexpensive?

I've got a FirePod, and I bought a firewire card for it as well. I remember when I bought it (at Best Buy, I think) - I thought, "I'm not going to get the most expensive thing, but not the cheapest either".

I don't remember what brand or anything it was - but it was middle-of-the-road. I'd think any moderately priced firewire card should do just fine - I just wouldn't get the cheapest thing you can find. No need to spend a ton, either.

Read:

Tells you which chipsets to avoid, which are recommended.

I was also very much looking at a Firebox, until I read deep enough into the manual and FAQ and realised that unlike the Firepod, you cannot connect multiple Fireboxes to the computer at the same time. So if you want to grow beyond 4 inputs, the Firebox you buy today is in the closet at that time. (Or re-sold, they do have good re-sell value.) So instead of the Firebox, I am looking at either used MOTU 828 (first revision) or Echo AudioFire4.

Thanks for the info! I'll ask this question a little better.
Well, for the folks that already have a firebox, what firewire card did you buy?

I'm kinda at the "i don't know" stage again. I'm contemplating between these two situations.

A.I can keep the audiophile and just get an m-audio dmp3 to handle the mic signal/Triton audio(not at the same time).

Pros: It'll only cost $150 to do that. Vocals and Triton would sound alot better since i won't need the berhinger preamps in the mixer.

Cons: Option B "MIGHT" give me a better overall sound./I would still need the behringer mixer for monitoring/I'd still wonder about the firebox in the back of my head :D

B. I can get the firebox from american musical.

Pros: It'll only cost me $100 right now(easy payment plan), I get free headphones/everything is in one box so i don't have to use as many cables/i won't have to use the behringer mixer/ I'd be kinda upgrading the pre at the same time because they sound better than berhinger pres/I can always get the dmp3 later

Cons: I have to buy and install a firewire card/kinda scared i'll buy the unit and something won't work right/ Might sound just as good as option A

I am buying a Mac Pro and a Firepod in the next few days. Just ordered the Logic Pro upgrade too. Can't wait!!

Tone I'd say go with the dmp3 then in the future get a better interface. JMO.
Also why do you want to run your Triton through a mic preamp?

Dude......you can predict what your choices will be next week?

Oh i was talking about running the Triton thru the 1/4 inputs on the dmp3 not the preamps. My bad i should have worded that different! :D

If you don't already have the FireBox and you don't already have a Firewire card, I wouldn't get either. There's nothing wrong with a Firebox! I use one with my Dell laptop and it's great. But the whole point of a Firewire or USB sound card is to avoid having to open up a computer to install a conventional sound card. If you have to dig around inside the computer anyway you should consider a standard PCI sound card. The only exception might be if you also need the Firebox's built-in mike preamps.

I already have an m-audio audiophile 2496. I was just thinking i might get better overall quality if i went this route since it's all in one box(except get a better pre).

Nevermind. I can't use the firebox. On the site they don't recommend using the firebox on systems with celeron processors. I have a celeron! :D As a result, i'll upgrade in this order: dmp3 preamp, good mic(AT4040 etc.), a good computer with firewire, pentium 4 and 1 gig of ram :D , and THEN get a better sound card, which i'll be able to use. Thanks guys!

I would put the interface first on my list. My opinion though.

Why would i get the interface if it isn't compatible with my system? I think it would be a better choice to wait until i get an updated computer with all the specs first. Now, if there's someone here who has a firebox and has a celeron processor, let me know. It said on the site that it was not recommended, a.k.a it will cause problems.

Well, i searched on line and i found a few folks who use the firebox and they have celeron processors. This whole thing is about to drive me crazy. If i got the dmp3 now, it would cost me more money right now than it would for me to get the firebox, since i can get the easy pay plan at american musical. If i got the firebox, i'd be upgrading the pres(from behringer) and the interface at the same time. I'm wondering point blank does the firebox sound better than my current audiophile pci. It seems like everyone i've listened to on soundclick has good recordings with the firebox but not with the audiophile. But, most of the people with audiophiles are using the behringer pres so i'm clueless. I went to the newegg website and saw some firewire cards and i was wondering which would should i get.
