Harvey: After participating in a few other forums I am of the opinion that you are the most serious, pro and unbiased voice concerning recording gear. So, in your opinion what would be a good mic (regardless of type) that won't cost a whole lot ($300-600). I already have a Senn. 421-11; Rode NTK. Oktava 319 and MC012, and a few other similar ones, but it seems like the LD condensers are tuned more for voice than for trumpet...

Would something like a Beyer 88 work better than the above for my application?

I think you'll find the Beyerdynamic ribbon mics are in your price range, and sound wonderful on trumpet. I've used the M130 and M260 with stellar results.

Scott: Thanks for the tip. I have heard this from many. Problem is the "cheapo" audio stores in this area (DC) only sell the usual low-end stuff and I know of no one that has Beyers to even look at one! Where did you buy yours? Would a Shure SM7 be comparable? I can obtain one of these readily, but the Beyers are another story....

No, a Shure dynamic is nothing like a ribbon mic. Try calling Sweetwater to find the Beyer ribbons, or do a google search. I bought mine several years ago at my local mom & pop music store - but I had to MAKE them order the mics for me. It's much easier now to use the internet.
