Hat STYLE. Not contents.
Hi folks! I just finished my first mix of a new song.

I'm trying a completely new vocal mixing technique, so hopefully they sound less thin than my previous mixes?

As always feedback is appreciated.

Dead Guy Talking.

(The short mix is about 30 seconds. The "not short mix" is a minute and a half.)

Sounds great. I lisened to the full 1.5 min version!

The drums might be a little boxy sounding and high in the mix, but they sound pretty good as is. I think you're going for a unique kind of sound to begin with, so probably a taste thing at this point?

I general, the tightness of the performances and the clarity of the mixes continues to improve. It's cool to be able to clearly hear all of the parts you have in there. I suspect there was stuff going on in your earlier mixes that I missed simply because I couldn't make them out clearly.

Thanks Heat!

Now that you mention it, I think I totally forgot to add reverb to the drums. That might explain some of the boxiness.
I'll make sure to remember it when I do a second mix tomorrow evening. (Until then, please keep the feedback coming so I have more stuff to do!)

I went for the whole enchilada on this one; the long version :D

Not really my usual listening fare, but you always have unique and creative tunes. I'll never pass up a chance to hear one of your tunes. I may not always comment, but I always check it out.

Like Heat said, you are continually improving and this mix is pretty much there. I think you're at the point of minor tweaks here and there and it's a matter of refinement and personal taste. Probably the snare could come down a bit. There are some spots where the lead vox gets buried. that's about all I got for suggestions.

Nice man, thanks for sharing.

Quirky and funky. I think it could use a bit of high end eq polish... maybe. I also hear a weird tonal thing at :30. There are some dissonant things there anyway, but something just sounds a bit too off right there. Probably a guitar thing. Heard it on speakers, but not with headphones. How can that be? Anyway, the only other thing I can hear is that there does not seem to be much of any panning of the bgv's compared to the lead vocal. With them eq'd about the same it gets a little muddy vocally. Lastly, make sure you don;t cut it before the last note fades. It seemed a bit abrupt and not a clean tail.

Thanks guys.

It's probably a good sign that more than one person has told me some drums are too loud, considering I tend to forget about them and mix them really low.

I didn't even think to EQ the vocal tracks differently, but that's probably a good idea. I'll look into it.

The last "note" is a snare hit, I think. I didn't specifically add a tail to it. Maybe it needs one.

Ok. New mix.

I added reverb to and turned down the drums.

I EQ'd the different vocal takes away from each other and spread the ban on the BG vox a bit.

I think the drums blend in better now. Well done.

My wife immediately commented that your singing reminded her of They Might Be Giants. I don't know them well enough to know if she's right...

Thanks Heat.

I've actually started listening to a lot more TMBG since HR folks told me that I kind of sound like them. :D Good band!

Cool song VCR . . . or VHS... Sorry...
Anyway, I definitely thought of early TMBG when the first few notes hit me but the lyrics and the overall arrangement remind me more of something Jonathan Coulton would do. I wasn't digging the extra distorted guitar at first but after everything else kicked in, it all sounded VERY cool!

I love the song. So quirky and cool.

I don't think I'd change much tonally. Maybe more crack to the snare. But I think that'd be it. Then I'd raise the vocal a db or two. Things get tough to hear in spots and I think the lyrics are pretty important to the song.

But that's it. I really liked it.

Man! I need to get famous fast! That's the second time that someone's said one of my songs sounds like Coulton this week. He's not that much older than me; I'd much rather that he be told that he sounds like Regdar and the Fighters! :D Thanks, Propman.

I'm not sure why it doesn't work on the iPad. They're just mp3s.

Thanks MMM. You really think the vox need to come up? I feel like they're already on the loud side.

Vocals are much better than your previous work. Way better. Way, way better. Well done there. The whole mix sounds better balanced and spacious than your previous work. You are definitely improving and have already come a long way. Next up, get those drums better.

id have to agree with the vocals they sound much better than other sounds...much better sound all round...

when I was hearing this i could help thinking of one of those marching bands snares playing....i think that would sound excellent with this
