on the tascam 424mkIII, when I play back my band's recording, for some reason it sounds better with dbx off. The DBX makes it too distorted. is there something I did wrong?

You'll want to play it back the same way you recorded it. In this case, with the switch off. When you next record your band, make sure the switch is "on" during the session, and always have it on during playback. In other words, I'd always leave it on, except when you playback today's session.
