I recently exchanged an Alesis 3630 (@#$%!) for a dbx 266XL. Question is, i'm looking to upgrade to another bdx compressor, but I'm not sure which is best for live use and tracking purposes. Mostly compressing drums and bass. Any suggestions? (I know Tom's around here somewhere...)
Thanks!

I'm here

I really dig the 1066, it's a gate, comp, and limiter. I use it a lot in my studio. The 160a is a direct decendant of the 160vu, it sounds great too. If you really want the best, the 160sl is the one. The thing to remember is that compressors are to engineers what guitars are to guitar players, you can't have just one. Or is that Lay's potato chips? Anyway, I have a bunch of different compressors for a bunch of different applications. There are some things that a VCA does well, and there are some things an Electro-Optical does well, try 'em all!

which flava?

Compressors, mic pre's, de-essers, limiters, parametrics, GEQ's, NR's, patchbays, channel strips, or digital stuff?

Great. I am actually headed in the 1066's direction. Figure I'll keep the 266 just to have another compressor on hand.
I like the 266, but the lack of limiting is a bit of a drawback. Can't complain at this price point though.

Cheers!

No offence, but Tom, your signature may hint at the fact you may work for dbx. Just a thought HA HA!

Yup...I'm a dbx guy.

Shhh, don't tell anyone, but I use other manufacturers stuff too. I actually started working for Harman International for 1 reason, employee discount. If I told you how much I got some of my gear for, I'd have to kill you ; )
