I went to guitar center thinking I wanted a dbx 266xl
compressor and the sales guy said I should get an Alesis midiverb4 (with auto level sensing) on special for about the same price.
He said it will do the same as the dbx overeasy setting plus give me all the cool effects. Appreciate any help.

Well then he must be a complete moron, the auto level sensing is a feature that sets the input level of the unit, it has absoultely no effect on the signal and most certainly is NOT a compressor.

The Midiverb 4 is a decent multi effect box, but I don't think it even has a compressor patch.

That guy deserves a good reaming, I hate sales people who talk out of their asses just to get a sale.

dbx

i got both the DBX 266 and the Midiverb 4 and that guy was lying to you at guitar center. the dbx is awesome as a compressor and the Midiver 4 is an awesome delay/reverb effect machine. but of course you knew that

Check out the dbx 286A - I've got the older 286, and love it. It's basically a mic processor, and has a mic pre, compressor, high & low shelving filters and a limiter that can be used as a gate.
