DBX 166XL vs. RNC Please respond ASAP Thanks!!

I did a test with a GT Brick straight into a Delta 1010, and then with an RNC in line between the two. There was a volume drop with the RNC in line, but no difference in tone (that I could tell). Of course the Delta 1010 can switch between -10 or +4, so that could compensate.
I don't know if this behavior is just with the Brick > RNC > Delta1010 combination, but I've seen this explained by others - including Fletcher. It has something to do with going from a 3 wire balanced line into a 2 wire unbalanced line.
Although it doesn't ultimately have to be a problem, I decided to just go with all balanced gear and wires.
Sounds like your experience is different than mine and that's cool!

The whole issue of gain loss from an unbalanced connection is a major red herring. That's what makeup gain is for. It's analogous to the difference between high output and low output pickups. My Telecaster doesn't put out as much signal as my Les Paul. That doesn't mean that the Les Paul is a better guitar or that it sounds better than my Tele or that my Tele is "tone sucking". It just means that the Les Paul is louder. The solution is simple. I turn the volume of my amp up a bit when I'm playing the Tele.

I'm a Les Paul and Tele guy, too! Both great guitars that I couldn't live without.
On the balanced/unbalanced issue, the major issue with me is that by compensating with makeup gain you won't have the same volume when A/B-ing the bypassed vs effected signal. To some that may not be a problem, but I like to be able to compare compressed or bypassed with the same signal volume. YMMV
Btw, I do agree that the RNC is the best compressor available in it's price range.
 
Since the DBX 166XL doesn't have an on/off switch, would it be bad to just leave it on?

Just kidding. No, it shouldn't be any problem at all leaving it on. Lots of studios stay "on" 24/7.

I never said I didn't experience a volume drop, I don't recall. I can say that I didn't experience ill effects.

What were you lying about? :D Just kidding. Truth be told, that's a lot tamer than some I've received, some of which were outright racist as well.

Although, honestly, less the abusive part, that's sprta what neg rep is for - if someone honestly believes that your reputation should take a hit for a posting, then I'm all for it.

I thought grey was negative rep from someone with no rep power and blue was positive rep from someone with no rep power. Never heard of black. Ultimately, you know what it all means? Jack shit. :D
