A Reel Person

It's Too Funky in Here!!!
Yes, it's true, Davemania's hit the web, at NWR!

This is the first mp3 I ever posted on the web, the first time I'm in the HRcom mp3 forum, and the first all-digital multitrack cut I ever produced, on my newly acquired Fostex FD-4. Three firsts!

The only thing that isn't new, is that it's a COVER, which is much the same for me, but this is my virgin voyage on NWR!

This is the first thing I've recorded in a long time. I'm not really asking for a critique, I just want you all to listen & enjoy, but critique if you want. It's all the same to me.

There's only one song loaded, listed under 'discography/singles'.

Thanx & have fun.
;)

I'll be honest with you Dave,it was great fun to listen to!Welcome to the digital world.I still haven't listened to Davemania extensively(a song here and there,I just don't have a lot of time),but this seems a bit ahead, fidelity wise.
The main acoustic guitar was real solid, all the way through.Lead vocals were pretty solid, and cut through real nice!Harmonies were occasionaly a little shaky. The guitar part that was playing Brians sitar was o.k.,but I would have played it a little more staccato, but it served the purpose. Not too shabby!
Dude,do you do any original stuff? You should, you're a talented guy!
In any event, you're having fun,and thats what counts!

a reel person,

nice effort, but it needs work on the recording. A lot of work.

Thanx beezel,...

... comments appreciated.

You're right, the FD-4 basic tracks really seem to have a bright, punchy sound, with higher S/N ratio, overall, than any of my tape-based recording systems. The comparison really opened my eyes. I haven't compared specs, but this machine has about 10db more headroom than anything else I've recorded on.

Functionally, the FD-4 seems to be a bit quirky, sometimes it skips and does flaky-ass stuff, but overall, I like it, and I like how it sounds.

This was the first thing I recorded since quite a while ago, and it was great to break out the jams again. I previously had a staccato lead, and overdubbed the long-sustain lead over it. All the typical flaws are there,... haha. Though it's a little rough & edgy, it's pretty much on par with the rest of my stuff, and done all for fun.

I'm trying to develop some original stuff, and giving it a lot of thought, but nothing's gelled yet. In the meantime, I'll continue to work up my chops on covers, from time to time. I want to work up a whole new body of work. I also want to increase my amount of hands-on practice and recording, and to start cranking it out again,... just for fun, of course.

Thanx for listening. I'm glad you enjoyed it, and thanx again for your comments! ;)

Thanx for listening CyanJaguar,...

and thanx for your comments.;)

Dave-O-Matic, hey guy. Nice tune. I'm glad you finally got your cherry. Now that you found out how it doesn't hurt or anything like that, pop on some "Davemania" in the future, in between your new recording. The Stones! Man. That's a great tune. Shit man, I sat down yesterday and pulled out the old banjo. Tickled the strings a little. Thinking of working up a little tune with it, mainly because, even though I have not heard everything here, I don't think I've ever heard a banjo featured in any tunz. I looked, or read, some about the FD-4 when I was researching. It was a front runner until I really decided to stay with Tascam and also a few more tracks. I'm having a great time with the features on the 788. It makes you use your brain, learning and remembering things. And it makes me RECORD.

Welcome to the tunz gallery!
later,

dtb

Dave,
Welcome to the digital realm, and welcome to the clinic. For some reason, winamp kept wanting to make this a "Chipmunks" song...

Thankfully, Vegas got you back down to normal speed.

I enjoyed your cover, and am looking forward to original Davemania stuff. If you wanna clabberate, head on over to artistcollaboration.com.

Thanx guys!

dtb- Nope, it didn't hurt at all! I didn't want to post any "Davemania" [4-cd] stuff, yet anyway, because I figured most of you have already heard it. I wanted to do something new, but I may put a few select "Davemania CD" cuts on there, eventually, or maybe some older "non-Davemania CD" stuff from the archives. You're right though, I've never heard the banjo featured here either. Go for it!

Track Rat- Thanx man, I will! Every day/every way! etc, etc...

B.SABBATH- Thanx sam, & I really appreciate your stuff too. Covers really are fun to do, and that's what I'm into recording for,... FUN!

Queue- Maybe I should do some Chipmunks covers,... you know,... really stretch myself! I should also check collaborationcentral.com for some original jams, sometime soon,... [and with you there to help me, then I probably will ;)]. Q- DOUBLE post, DOUBLE thanx!

Although I like the all-digital FD-4, I still have so much analog equipment, that I'll continue to try to spread the load, over all the different recording setups,... like a gear-rotation plan!

Also, I've got the analog 1"-24-track, with the 'track-link' switch that links all 3-banks of 8, which I plan to use in linked-up fashion, for a pseudo-1"-8-track recording, that's sure to rival the digitals in sound quality. Sounds like fun, huh? [future plans/TBA]

No doubt, being the unreformed gear junky I am, I'll probably get more all-digital gear too, now that the digital bug's bitten me! [as financials permit]

Also, in true fashion, you-know-who got a new GUITAR for Fathers' Day! [me!]

Happy Fathers' Day to all you DADS. [6/16/02]

Thanx you guyz,... for listening and for your comments!
Rock on y'all! ;)

Hey now, hey now...

I've just uploaded a second COVER tune to NWR.

It's an older recording, not previously included on my 4-cd set.

Same as before, just done for fun. Listen, enjoy, & critiques are optional.

Check it out! Thanx. /DA;)

you capture the essence of the tunes. interesting to listen to...thx for the post

Thanx for listening mixmkr,...

& thanx for the comments.;)

Just Heard It, Dave...

And I gotta say I am impressed with the way you are handling your transition to the Digital World.

I can hear your voice much better (Hey! You aren't such a bad singer!)

And the music is clearer..The guitar work in "Paint It Black" had a nice shimmy to it!

When we get together in the summer I will get your drums tuned up and get you a cleaner mix on them.

Cut, Paste, Copy, Baaaaby!!

Good job, Dave!

:D

Man that is mostly amazingly crisp! And well done

A couple of boogered clippy spots but hey- this is a Stones Tune!

>Also, I've got the analog 1"-24-track, with the 'track-link' switch that links all 3-banks of 8, which I plan to use in linked-up >fashion, for a pseudo-1"-8-track recording, that's sure to rival the digitals in sound quality.

That's where I'd be heading..... In the Tape world Wide And Fast is nice!

Don't slip too far into the digital dimension or you'll be obliged to change your net name "A Bit Person" or some such thing. Just doesn't have the same ring or double meaning.

Nice work on "mothers little helper"

Fun to listen to your stuff. You always manage to do the covers justice.

Peace,

Theron.

Somehow I think I should've gotten the FD-8, instead of the FD-4,...

'cause 4's pretty limiting, and yes, I'm used to 4-trackin', but I do prefer 8, if given the choice. 4-tracks makes it a real challenge to arrange the parts cleanly & concisely, with no room for fluff. That's for sure.

Thanx Vil, sounds like a plan, so come on over, & BTW, "Paint It Black" is on the list of things to do. I've been hit with inspiration again. [Who died?]

Thanx Doc, yeah, I saw the clipping, and heard it, but hey, overall I think the song works, and holds together as a cohesive piece, despite the clippy parts, and other minor flaws. BTW, I thought of doing a remake of this same tune onto 8-track anyway, just to flesh it out more, but I'll have to put that on my list of things to RE-do. Haha. Right now, I'm working on another different tune, that I think y'all like,... when it's done.

Thanx Theron, you're right, but at least "A Bit Person" is better than a "A Byte Person", isn't it? Haha. I can't be "Digital Dave", 'cause that's too close to "Digital Don". How about "A Bit Player"? That's not too bad. How about "Hard Drivin' Dave", or how about "16/44x7/24"? [I'll have to work on that].

Anyway, I haven't divorced my analog equipment yet, but the FD-4 gives me another perspective on recording, and it's a pretty cool sounding toy, but sometimes damn quirky, skipping or flaking out in the middle of the song, which can be frustrating, and can break my concentration. I might be looking into a 2.5" internal drive, to mount in the FD-4. Right now, it just has the SCSI EZ-Flyer 230 hard drive/removable cartridge. Despite it all, I like the FD-4. Next stop, FD-8-ville.

Like I said, with so much gear, I've gotta keep on the 'gear rotation' plan, and anyway, it's all about the music in the end.

Hopefully, I'll work something else up, and post another song fairly soon. I'll let you know when I post to NWR again.

Thanx for listening you guys, and thanx for the comments!;)
