Davemania Returns: My newest single, a COVER

As usual, I haven't read the other posts yet.

This tune moves really nice - the way it moves is its strongest point. But the vocals are buried under the instrumentation, especially that guitar. I like the guitar - the shambling rhythm works a treat for the idea of 'solitary man', but you gotta bring the vocals up about 2.5 dB. Alternately, you could cut the guitar by the same amount. You sing well. Don't be shy. :D

Singing's so much fun, yeah?

dobro,...

Funny to get you on this thread, but I do appreciate that you'd participate.

I've reviewed a lot of old Davemania-related threads, and I remember how critical and nasty you & I got with each other, but I'm here to say, let's let bygones be bygones.

There were a number of people who were super-critical about the "spam" issue, and down on me and my posts in general, but believe it or not, after having gotten and heard the Davemania CD set for themselves, it turned a LOT of them around for the better, and landed them in my camp of positive supporters. Funny, but time has a way of changing everything. Anyway, in BBS terms, that was a long time ago.

With regard to my latest offerings at NWR, I think the lofi 56k encoding and lofi playback that most people use, has a detrimental effect on the overall sound that's presented to the listener.

Technically, when I browse NWR for new stuff, I'll use the lofi playback to sample the tune, and then if I like it, I'll download the entire file, and listen to it in it's hifi form. That's what works best for me, and there is a big difference between lofi and the hifi you'll get by downloading.

The 56k encoding is another issue, that I'm currently working on upgrading, and re-posting these tunes in 128k format, which I think will boost the clarity a noticeable amount. Stand by for that.

The song, Solitary Man, does move well, and that's indicative of the great songwriting of classic Neil Diamond. It's always been one of my favorite songs, and I like to choose really strong songs when I do covers,... which is all the time.

The Neil Diamond vocalistic style is very compelling, the song is very heartfelt, and I just do the best with what I have.

I think I have high standards without being absolutely perfectionistic, and I know that translates into my recordings, with little imperfections here & there.

Thanx for the compliment, the singing was the most fun part of this song.

I'm not sure I'll be remixing any of this stuff, but I will re-encode it into a 128k hifi format, that should improve the sound quality that's delivered over NWR.

Thanx again to Waldo, for having a great site.

dobro, thanx very much for listening, and thanx for your comments.;)

Not funny at all if you know me. You're a regular - I'm interested in your music.

"I've reviewed a lot of old Davemania-related threads, and I remember how critical and nasty you & I got with each other, but I'm here to say, let's let bygones be bygones."

Sure.

"There were a number of people who were super-critical about the "spam" issue, and down on me and my posts in general, but believe it or not, after having gotten and heard the Davemania CD set for themselves, it turned a LOT of them around for the better, and landed them in my camp of positive supporters. You see it as a loyalty and support issue, but I don't. I'm still opposed to people spamming this board. When you spam, I'll try to stop it. When you post mp3s in the clinic, I'll review them. Simple.

"With regard to my latest offerings at NWR, I think the lofi 56k encoding and lofi playback that most people use, has a detrimental effect on the overall sound that's presented to the listener."

I don't think it's the encoder in the case of the comment I made about the vocal being too quiet - I think it's level.

Great effort on this one! Neil Diamond is cool!

The only feedback I would have would be to watch the mids. I would have liked to hear the horns come out a bit and some more harmony -- imho --

You did a great job of capturing the feel of the song!

Nice job!

I listened to both tunes.. ''solitary' and 'New years'

They were both fun listens.. I wont bother to critique them because you dont seem to really care about that sort of thing... I liked the solo in new years..

I'll just say that it was a nice effort, and you really caught the vibe of the tunes..

If someone else posted these tunes, I would probably have more to say.. ;)

Always a fun listen!

dobro- On the vocal level,...

I noticed it needed to come up a bit, but if I raised it any more than that, I'd get clipping going into the first chorus,... ["Don't know that I will..."], so I just got the vocals up to 'just before clipping', and that's what you hear on the mix presented on NWR. Thanx again for listening and for your comments.;)

boydrj- I hear what you're talking about, and basically agree. Thanx for listening and thanx for your comments.;)

King E-,... Ha, you got me!!;)

SABB- Don't get me wrong, I do care about people's comments and critiques, but I may not have the time and energy to endlessly remix things. IMO, Everyone who listens usually has something valuable to say or contribute. I'm listening to people's comments, and I do care. I'm glad you found these a fun listen, and that you found some redeeming value in some of the aspects of the production. You may give me a more detailed critique if you wish, and I'll always appreciate it. Thanx again for listening, and for your comments.;)

~Gas- Yes, for me it's all about having fun, but of course I'm interested in showcasing my work, and improving my basic recording skills, as well as participating in the HR online community, of which there's a huge pool of talent. Thanx for listening, for your comments and support.;)
