My newest creation. I didn't know whether to call it "Victim of Lust" or "Date Rape". I went with the latter because I guess it's a little more in-your-face. :D

Disclaimer - in no way, shape, or form do I condone rape. :o

Anyway, here it is:
Date Rape

Any mix/performance comments/suggestions are welcome and appreciated. :)

Thanks,
Greg

Here's the stupid lyrics:

She don't wanna drink your drink
She don't care about what you think
She aint giving you the time of day
You're trying hard to be real cool
You end up looking like a fool
You know there's gotta be another way

You got tricks up your sleeve......

She don't want a man tonight
And you know that it aint right
You're trying everything you know to do
Trying your best pick-up lines
The ones she's heard a hundred times
You can't believe that she aint digging you

She don't care about you say
You don't care about what you do
Slip her a pill, it's the only way she will
You fucking loser
Victim of lust - a date rape
She's a victim of lust - a date rape

Patience is growing thin
All you wanna do is win
You're running out of funny things to say
Before you got the time to think
You slip a mickey in her drink
Turn around and quickly walk away

Your trap is set......

She chugs her drink like nothing's wrong
The DJ plays another song
All you gotta do is wait and watch
She's getting dizzy, visions blurred
She spills her drink, words are slurred
Your belt is gonna get another notch

She don't care about you say
You don't care about what you do
Slip her a pill, it's the only way she will
You motherfucker
Victim of lust - a date rape
She's a victim of lust - a date rape

She falls down at the bar
You drag her out to your car
And you take her away!

She don't care about you say
You don't care about what you do
Slip her a pill, it's the only way she will
You fucking loser
Victim of lust - a date rape
She's a victim of lust - a date rape
She's a victim of lust - a date rape
Poor girl
She's a victim of lust - a date rape
She's a victim of lust - a date rape

As for the title...I you could probably get away with "Victim of Lust or Date Rape?"...if you hadn't printed the lyrics I would have never know it was an 'a' and not an 'or.'

It's a pretty "punky" song in my opinion...so going against what is considered P.C. is par for the course. Your lyrics are quite the opposite of stupid in this case.

And as much as I would love to find some way of nitpicking the mix with some sort of potentially constructive criticism, I can't really find anything in there that I object to...other than the morality of the lyrics which rank beyond the "bitch-slapping your grandmother" level of the quease-o-meter. Well done on all fronts!

Instead, as a mostly noob to the field, I would like to ask some of the techniques you used for this song...from mic placement to signal chains. Whatever you feel like sharing. :)

Another kick ass jam....dig the reverse swell thing when the vocal kicks in at the beginning of the verses...guitars sound nice and crisp....upfront in your face mix man...sounds great...dig the guitar solo, do I detect a bit of 2 handed tapping in there :p! Sounds great!!!! One thing, and I am listening on crappy earbuds at work...but the high end seems just a little sizzling like....I notice on the "S's" in the vocals and the cymbals..but it might just be my lame PC here at work....
This rocks dude...I look forward to your CD!

Thanks a lot for listening. :)

I'd love to help you if I can, but there's just too much happening to list everything. If you have any specific questions, I'm happy to answer them the best I can.

Thanks queepy. I appreciate the comments. I'm trying to balance the high end right on the doorstep of ear destruction without going over. My room isn't great and I've been finding that my mixes have been a little middy-bottom heavy when I reference them on other systems. Maybe I over-compensated, but it sounds decent over here. If you can give another listen on better speakers at some point and check it out again, I'd love to hear what you think. Thanks bud. :)

Oops...yeah, seeing how I record stuff vs. the veterans, you have many more steps in the process. Ok, how about just the mic'ing techniques and recording environments then, since that seems to be a source of infinite variables that pique my interest. You achieved the drum, bass, guitar, vox sources...how? :p

Love it! The only thing that i find is that the cymbals are a little too bright. That may be my headphones. Otherwise this is a great song and a geat mix.

The drums are a 6 pc Mapex Pro-M kit mic'd with an inexpensive Cad-Pro 7 pc set. The O/H's are mini SDC's in the Recorderman configuration. All mic's go into a Firepod and then into Reaper.

Guitars are an Epi SG > Digitech RP300a processor > crappy 60W SS practice amp > SM57 > Firepod > Reaper. For this song, the L and R rhythm guitars were double-tracked and panned wide.

Bass is a cheapo Squire P-bass recorded direct into Reaper via Firepod.

Vocals were done with an AT2020 > Firepod > Reaper.

As you can see, none of my stuff is high-tech or super complicated. I'm just a hack, man. I'm no veteran. I've only been home recording for like 2 years. I just try to do the best I can with what I got. Nothing fancy. My room is mediocre at best. I just try to pay careful attention to details like mic placement and tuning - especially with the drums. Nothing fucks up a song like a bad drum mix. I try my best to get a good natural sound recorded, but if I have to do some serious tweaking in the box, I will. I probably break dozens of recording "rules". I don't care. :D

Okay thanks. That's 2 votes for too bright. I'll look into it.

Heusus...that is nothing like what I was expecting to hear. You are my new hero! I could almost pull the same thing off with my current setup! If I only had a brain...er...the know-how.

*is now inspired....* :D

Oh wait...I have to sleep...have work tonight  Must practice more tomorrow night...

Oh, and if you can get this result from "breaking the rules," then I might just have to forget everything that I have ever learned...this is good stuff....

Mix sounds awesome cranked up on my surround system, a lot of punch and aggression to the tune. Nice work! If it means anything seeing the title "date rape" made me think of sublime since they have a tune by the same name, so maybe "victim of lust" would work better, don't know  Anyway, the tune kicks ass :D:D

No dude. Don't forget everything. The basics and fundamentals are of the utmost importance. You still need to play well and track well. When I say "break the rules" I mean cut, boost, gate, compress, etc as you feel it's necessary. There are lots of "don't boost more than x db" rules out there. You can break those if you need to. What you can't do is half-ass record some shit and hope to fix it in the mix. Mixing isn't really for fixing a poor performance or poorly tracked sound.

Thanks bud. Yeah I just found out about the Sublime song of the same name a few days ago. I was pretty aggravated, but it further confirms my belief that pretty much everything has been done. My song blows theirs through the wall though, so I'm sticking with it. :D

I haven't listened to it yet...but read the lyrics and don't see where they are offensive....I mean, you call the guy a motherfuker and a loser and such..you aren't putting him on pedestal or making him a hero...and maybe a little reminder to keep your drink with you at all times, wouldn't hurt anyone...oh gawd..you just did a "message" song for women...hahahahahah....I am woman, I am strong..our very own punk Helen Redding:p...oh yah...now you need to come up with a song, where she spikes his drink right back the next night...oh my..the possibilities of where that could go.......could get pretty deep....:D:eek::D:eek:

Lol. Yeah this is very loosely based on a true story that I witnessed at one of my gigs a few months ago. There was a hotty sitting at the bar, and there was this one douche that wouldn't get away from her. She was obviously not interested. He was trying his best, but was such a tool. Me and my guitarist were laughing at the guy and we both wondered if he was gonna drug her. He just looked like that kind of guy. He eventually disappeared and I think my guitarist got her phone number, but I'm not sure. I gotta ask him. :D

Hey man, great to hear you writing more and more. Your recordings always sound great now. I've come to expect a certain level from you, so it's hard to criticize much.

This could use more kik drum, though. No joking, I don't mean you should double it. :D But it should come up.

Okay thanks Rami. Do you think it needs to be overall louder, or maybe just more attack?

More attack, but I bet if you just turned it up, the extra meat wouldn't hurt. Which I'm beginning to suspect is the reason my girlfriend keeps going out "with the girls". :(

Great sounding tune Mr. L-cool punk rocker! It sounds like a Ramones tune with a ass kicking guitar solo added in there-very nice finger tapping in the solo....:D

Cool song. I agree with RAMI that it could use a little more "meat" it might just be because I'm listening at low volume since it's late. The mix is super tight almost too much so I guess I just expect a little nastiness from a punk song.

Just nitpicking though I really like the song.

What did you do to the bass after tracking? Any eq? compression? Just looking for some tips since I'm pretty new to recording live bass and I like how the bass sounds on this track.
