what mic was celine dion using on her CD " A new day" Whatever it is it is the beast.

It is interesting how artists sound different over different CDs. They all souund good but there is usually one album that has a better path than the rest.

For example, Andrea Bocelli has the best voice in the world (IMO so no flames) but his sound on "romanza" was better than any of his other Cds.

Celine's mic

CelineDion records exclusively with a Stephen Paul modified Elam251.
He did the mic especially for her.
He's also done mics for Barbara Streisand and many other top recording artists.

stephen paul. That would explain a lot.

the fact that its an Ela M would explain some of the top end sizzle that made me think that it was not a vintage Neumann.

I still think that the mixing engineer probably removed some of the top end sizzle from some of the tracks . If memory serves me correctly, the Ela M is more sizzly than how her voice sounds on " A new day"

Yeah, SPA ELAM251... Barbara too... Yeah... What radioprof said...

Yeah, compression/limiting... Lots of it... Most likely lots of EQing too... And then lots more compression/limiting.

According to Humberto Gattica, the "Celine Dion Sound" usually consists of:

Celine Dion --> ELA-M251 modified by Stephen Paul --> Custom Built Mic Pre --> dbx 160VU compressor (or Neve 33609) --> GML 8200 EQ --> AMS RMX 16 Reverb

Hm, I really don't think he sings that well om romanza. It sounds a bit more strained than I remember him otherwise. (But I have only listened to it once, so I might have been in a bad mood. *goes to fetch the CD*)

the reverb quality is also a big part of her sound.

well, I cant fault another man's opinion. However, I would be interested in knowing which current female performers you prefer over her.

HIs voice definitely had less top end on romanza. I thought his vocal was tighter and more focused than on any other cd.

Personally, I think Celine Dion is very talented. That doesn't mean I want to listen to her though.

As for current female performers, I'm really digging Nina Nastasia lately.

All that to capture one soul-less performance after another.

I figured somewhere in the signal chain was an ATM machine...........

:D :D

ROTFLMAO

Celine Dion is not that bad. C'mon, maybe her style is a little on the "cracker" side but still, she does have a good sounding voice.

Fankly, I find her unlistenable but that is merely my taste. I do recognize that she has a remarkabley good voice? agent? publicist?

While on the subject though, what would your opinion be of Diana Krall ( I think that is the correct name and spelling). Soulful or Soulless. Just wondering?

I think Dion's voice is freaken anoying and it doesn't sound good to me. And like Jerry W said it "is a little on the "cracker" side" and Diane Krall is not to far behind her. But I would rather listen to Krall over Dion any day. Her piano chops aren't fancy but it passes. Krall style is pop jazz and Dion's is POP CRAP! But thats my opinion so who cares.

I like the special emphasis that Celine gets when she pounds her fist on her chest. Really emphasizes the high end "shlock" in her voice.

Excuse me while I pick myself up from the floor and try to regain my breath... I think I'm going to steal that "ATM in the signal chain somewhere," that's about the funniest thing I've heard since the State of the Union speech.

regarding the ElaM and sizzle... i'm just guessing (as I've never been lucky enough to use either one of them), but I would think that the Stephan Paul modded ElaM would not necessarily retain all of the timbral qualities of the original (although I'm sure it would sound "better"!)

The "best line" award goes to c7sus for the "ATM" comment!

The Celine Dion mystery is solved.
She seems like a nice person with an excellent voice, however,
she doesn't move me either.

Chris

Check out Alison Krauss with Union Station. The reverb on "New Favorite" just makes me melt. She did some of the stuff on the "oh brother where art thou" soundtrack.
Celine Dion......bleh sounds like showboaty diva crap......maybe if any song she had ever done was worth a damn i might care about her.Not to mention her husband/manager is a creep..

Couldn't have said it any better than that.

Also, what deadleafecho said. Alison Krauss is at the top of my list of favorite female singers.

My all time favorite femal singers:

Pop: Aretha, Gladys Knight, Mavis Staples, Chaka Khan... (you get the picture)

And for jazz: Sarah Vaughn.

Male: Bob Marley, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Joe Williams

I'm sorry Mariah, Christina, Celine, etc. Maybe that makes me an old fart. But to me, they just don't make 'em like that anymore.
