My all time favorite femal singers:

Pop: Aretha, Gladys Knight, Mavis Staples, Chaka Khan... (you get the picture)

And for jazz: Sarah Vaughn.

Male: Bob Marley, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Joe Williams

I'm sorry Mariah, Christina, Celine, etc. Maybe that makes me an old fart. But to me, they just don't make 'em like that anymore.

my fave rapper: melle mel, who uttered the famous, "chaka khan..."

my fave singers: george jones, frank sinatra, any of the beatles, joey ramone, the band's main vocalists (danko, manuel, helm)...

Ray Charles & Co

Well I saw Ray Charles live in concert just last Sunday at the Melbourne International Music and Blues Festival.

This guy is what... 74 years old?!! Amazing!!

In fact over the three days some of the acts were.....

Wilson Pickett, Bob Dylan, Ani DiFranco, Beth Orton, Ray Charles, Tony Joe White, John Mayall, The Waifs, Billy Thorpe and about fifty others!

Tony Joe White was excellent too!!

If I necessarily have to choose a rapper (like someone said elsewhere I too think they missed a 'c' somewhere) it would be melle mel. But 'any' of the beatles? Ringo? :)

As much as I appreciated Dylan's 60's stuff, I don't know how his name could ever appear in a topic where great singing was discussed.

well, the things that ringo did he did pretty well though his abilities were extremely limited. initially, his solo career was much bigger than any of the other three. i really kind of meant i'd take any and all of 'em anyhow.

btw, i met melle mel once and he invited me to go hang out with him. i had to go home and study for a test so i missed that one.

I think Bob Dylan was a "great singer" in the sense his singing was sincere and "authentic" for the genres of folk and folk-rock.
His phrasing is thought provoking on quite a number of his songs,
although having a tremendous gift for lyric writing doesn't hurt either!

Much rather listen to "Blond On Blond' tha most of today's pop divas who are ... blond. :)

Wheres Ringo

Ringo's solo career bigger than the other three?

Has anybody heard Neko Case? She has an amazing voice.

I'm pretty sure that Ringo actually had more top-20 hits in the '70's than any of the other three. That's one of those "amazing but true" rock trivia facts. Of course, I couldn't actually name any of those hits.

Has anybody heard Neko Case? She has an amazing voice.

Yep. Agreed.

when a little help from his friends, ringo's solo career did quite well through about 1974 or so. he had some pretty good chart success including a no. 1 album and run of top 10 singles (with a few going to no. 1 as well).

neko is way cool.

Hmm

The first Beatle to go #1 solo was actually George Harrison for "I got my mind set on you" I deffinately think Paul has a bigger career, with all the Wings stuff and the "baby I'm amazed" days, and just recently with the new album and tour. I mean, he is the richest rockstar on the planet. This discussion really deserves its own thread in the "People that still talk about Wings" forum, but hey, no point is small enough.

And now for cwoffee twalk with Linda Richmond:
George Harrison dying of Cancer, OH! I'm all vaclempt!.... heres a topic. Which one of the Beatles had the biggest solo career? Discuss.

Music is like Butta!

of the current crop of female singers, i think i'd have to go with Toni Braxton for quality of instrument and musicality.

Agreed, although I'd have to go with Diana Krall overall; I like more of her material, and she's one of the few females who seem to know how to get aggressive with a piano when it's called for.

I find myself wishing Toni would do more songs like Spanish guitar, and less like "Rutting Noises from the Back Seat", but that's material/producer choices, not talent... Steve

I admire Paul McCartney's talent but he just grinds on me a lot of times. In his own way, he managed to waste a motherload of talent. But, all of the Beatles are guilty of that with the exception of Ringo who went beyond all expectations.
