amen to that.

i'm very very very picky about my vocalists. Being a composition major and an instrumentalist who is fond of jazz....the vocalist has to really impress me to like him/her. And Maynard does just that. His tone, style and technique is right on. I think he still is one of the only rock singers that can hold a note for as long as he does. :)

What you've heard on the radio, Tim, is not Tool. Yeah, those are the popular songs....and in my city those songs have JUST started to become songs that are being played on the radio. In fact, just a few weeks ago I heard the DJ of an alternative station that usually plays Blink 182 or other pop bands say "yes, that was a Tool song...mark it on your calendars, we played a tool song."

Alternative music has become harder lately. Anyone listen lately to the radio? It's more Metallica and stuff on the alternative stations, so the "rock" stations have resorted to a little more hardcore/head banging or old school rock. Tool is really neither of those.

Still some of my favorite Tool songs that you won't hear on the radio
The Grudge
Eulogy
Parabola
Triad

They have a lot of really avant garde stuff...more experimental rock than anything....that you will never hear on the popular or rock stations. Such as, Message to Harry Hanbeck and that phone call to a judicial office or something in LA.
Not to mention, their one of the few bands that I've heard of who have thrown a piano off a cliff for the sole purpose of recording the sounds of it!

You guys aren't getting it. I have heard it all - in fact, I probably heard tool a year before any of you ever even heard of them. I have the first 2 Tool CD's, my Bass player has played the last 2 - plus the Perfect Circle CD's until I'm sick of hearing it. That's the point you guys aren't getting I HATE most Avante Garde stuff, I don't like most Jazz, I don't like the musical tone that tool sets- I find it boring, dreary, and depressing sounding to me, and I still think Maynard sounds exactly like Ian Anderson.

So you're saying when they play Sober, Prison Sex, or Stinkfist on my local Alternative station that it's not tool?

Our Alternative station plays mostly the following types of bands : Tool, Shinedown (local/hometown band), Cold (another local), Korn, S.O.A.D., Nickelback, Disturbed, Linkin Park, Seether, Lit, Mudvane, Limp Bizkit (locals), Slipknot, Weezer, Metallica, Velvet Revolver, NIN, etc. - mostly harder bands.

In fact that could be their entire catalog. Takes those bands and play them over and over, and there's Planet Radio. :D

And then their is the message of the band. They sing about the genocide of the Armenians by the Turks, and they have even done concerts to raise money so the genocide would be recognized.

I like SOAD's music, but can't stand their Leftist politics.

Whoa! ...Look at this!!

This is exactly what I was talking about in the other thread! Someone posts a band that they really like, and every jumps in to proclaim how that band sucks! One person expresses dissent among the ranks about a band that is generally accepted as good and you guys form a line to tell him why he's wrong. What a bunch of hypocrites!

I liked Tool when they came out. I got a T-Shirt from their manager. I still like them. If someone doesn't like a band I do, I'm cool with that. Its their RIGHT to disagree with me.

Personally, I like chocolate ice cream. I can only eat it for so long before I wanna switch to another flavor. Tool starts to have the same effect after a while. So does most metal for that matter...

Maybe I'll switch and tell you how much Tool sucks just for spite! I'll bet that would get alot of people all riled up, wouldn't it? :D :D

Really? I think they are too conservative... haha jk, but I do agree with their politics all the way. Also, they are all of Armenian heritage, and since I'm Greek, I can relate to them culturally because of what was done to us by the Turks (even though the Armenians had it worst, and just so you know, I have nothing against Turkish people, just their government).

too each his own. i'm just giving you reasons why i think they are anything but stale. you can hate them if you want. but they brought rock/metal into a whole new light when they came out.
As far as the songs your local alternative station plays...does anyone else think that they have gotten more hard core? I just still remember that when people said "alternative station" it was Blink 182, Greenday, 311, Chili Peppers.....all the bands you'd see on MTV (when they used to play music).
Now, it's songs like you said...Korn, Slipknot, Weezer, Metallica, Tool....it's weird, that's all I'm saying.

A Perfect Circle has nothing to do with Tool except they have the same singer. Totally different Maynard in my opinion.

A Perfect Circle is definately different. But i still love em :D . At the same time, I cna understand why someone wouldn't like tool or a perfect circle. I kinda know how Tim Brown feels, most of my friends love classic rock, and since I can't stand most of it, I usually have the leasy popular opinions :p .

I like their hooks and rhythms but I extremely hate their style.
Yeah, King Diamond had an incredible range but like all of them, they sold their soul.
Lets write something other then Witches burning at the stake and 1000 days in sodem.

Dude, I can't believe you like that nu-school chocolate crap. It's so overstocked at the local grocery store. All they ever carry is chocolate, strawberry, mint chocolate chip, and rocky road. In fact, that's probably all you can buy there, the same flavors all the time. You're so stupid for liking chocolate. Everybody knows old-school flavors like vanilla are better. :)
