The first day I took my 57 out of the package, i dropped it, and at the time I didn't notice any signs of damage. Today, however, I noticed the grlle part in the middle of the end of the mic is dented. I don't notice any problems when I record, but could I be getting alot better tone if it wasn't dented?

You cant kill a 57. When you dropped it, that mic probably laughed at you and shot you the bird and screamed "Is that all you got pussy!!". No, really, its probably fine. Some of mine are mangled beyond belief.

The grill isn't supposed to be flat, it's concave. But, like he said, you have to try harder than that to kill a '57.

I have a couple of 57's that are FUCKED UP and they still sound good.

sure, anything affects the sound to a degree... will you hear the difference??? i'm sure you won't. but, if it's under warranty and it is bothering you... send that shit back!!!

I think he said he dropped it. I don't think that's covered under warranty.... even Shure's... :D

good point... but when i bought mine from musicians friend, i bought the 1 year no questions asked return warranty for $17.

I broke the plastic grill on one of my 57's.

Anyone know where to buy a replacement?

I know you can get replacement 58 grills easily.

He doesn't need a warranty...it's an SM57. Just be glad it's not an SM58...that would look bad.

I thought it was convex! :D

My husband used to work for Shure, he has described what those mics have to pass to get out of the plant. A small dent is nothing! If I remember what he told me, they have to survive like a 20 ft drop, maybe more. If they don't, the design is not approved..

SM 57 stands for how many times you can drop, throw, kick, and smash it before it finally breaks. (maybe)
