DA-38 Question

I'm looking at getting a Tascam DA-38 or even the DA-88, and I new to the whole ADAT concept. I was wondering if there is anyway to put an ADAT card into my pc and transfer all 8 tracks from the DA-xx to the PC simutaneously? Like through a cable connecting the 2 through the lightpipe (If i'm even using the term right. That could be something i'm completely using wrong.). Thank you for all your help in advance.

First of all a DA38 or 88 is not ADAT. They are DTRS. Big difference. The DA38 (I have 2 of them) do not have lightpipe. That's an ADAT thing. But, Tascam make a unit called the MMC-38 which through midi will sync the Tascam machine to a computer. I got one of these just before the holiday's but have not had a chance to hook it up. They still sell new for around $250 but I found mine on ebay for $99.
What you really need to do is see if you want ADAT or DTRS. I have used both and the DA38 is a much better way to go IMHO.

I have two DA38s and a DA78 and I agree these machines are
much better then ADAT.

5x dtrs over here, but be aware...they have transport hardware which like any vcr gads bad after a while...our studio was facing the dilemma...buy 5x new dtrs or go for hd based recording....not to get stuck with the same problem within 5 years from now we opted for the hd....the dtrs are going to used only for recording on location from now on.

So, if you get a used dtrs..check the hours of the machine...anything above 750 is offhands unless you get it really cheap

What about using TDIF PCI/822?

I noticed you didn't mention the option of using the pci/822. this should be easy and get you to your recording hard disk software just as easy... I just got mine setup for my new computer... I hope to learn a lot from this forum...
