Flailing up a storm.
Cutting out portions of a track.

I hav ehad a couple instances where i have wanted to cut out portions of a song or track (basically delete a few secs leading into the playing or cut out a portion where there was a "false start" or the like"). Is this possible? The only way i could figure out how to pull this off was to open each track alone, and mixdown the tracks, one at a time to a new mono track, startign from a specific time.

Am i missing something here?

Also, if i end up with a stereo track (i can see the two sepereate wave signatures in the track), is there a process to split this down to two seperate mono tracks?

Thanks
Daav

For removing from the beginning of the track, there is a small square that you can use to move the beginning of the track...same with the end of the track.

To mute portions of your track, hold the 'Alt' button down to see the level line. You can then drag this line to adjust your levels.

To split a track, select (lft mouse button down, drag mouse horizontally on track, lft mouse button up) the selection you want to cut. Then use the main menu to 'Split Track'. Then you can right click on the split track section and select 'Remove Part'.

That should cover most bases. Hope that helps.

Thanks much, i will play around with those suggestions. I read the hel entry on split track, and thought it was for cutting in into two sections (begining and end) rather than splitting out the channels, cool.

Thanks.

Once the track is split into multiple pieces, you can then right click on the 'blank' portion where the tracks are and tell it to add a blank track. Then you can drag the track parts amongst other tracks by using the Ctrl key.

another thing you can do is highlight the section of the track you wish to silence and going to the "silence selection" section under the edit tab. i always silence things non-destructively by just setting the volume to 0 instead of actually removing the sound. it may be handy to reverse something later. one great thing about this is that you can zoom in on the track and get the exact spot you are looking for.

honestly, this advice may be a bit vague. since my n-track had been down for a while (see "n-track insanity. help") i haven't done this for a bit so i may be missing something. it's best to play around first without saving the changes. it's not hard and once you figure it out it will be a very useful thing to know.

i'm using version 3.3 so there may be some difference with newer versions, but i accomplish what you're talking about by...

select the part of the track you want to remove,
use the "splice" command to create a "part" out of the highlighted area,
right click on the part and remove it.

splice is found under the edit/non-destructive menu. (at least in ver. 3.3 it is)

you don't have to be exact in your selecting of the part. once you remove the part you will have the small squares at the end of the part box that can be drug left or right to adjust the start stop point for the part.

hth...

later...
