Hello

I just got Cubasis VST 2.0. I had been working with Cakewalk Pro Audio 9 previously. I no almost nothing about Cubasis. Apparently it is Cubase's Little Brother, and I am not sure what the VST thing means. I have discovered the VST instruments and they are pretty cool. I am a little confused as to WHAT they are though. I think it somewhere between MIDI and Audio... ?

I hope somebody can help with the following problems/queries:

1. Is it possible to add more VST instrument channels (there seem to be only four). I know it is possible to patch the same instrument through each channel, but I really want more channels! Are there other instruments available for download somewhere?

2. Is it possible to add more effects loops to the program? There are only 2 effects loops available for each project, which really doesn't cater to my (possible) needs. There is also a single effects insert available per track. Are there other effects units available for download somewhere.

3. A technical issue. Often, the playback clips out in the left channel, leaving only the right channel playing. Often also, the program starts dropping notes. In both situations, I have to stop playback, "Reset all devices", and continue. It tends to go 2 ways, either it sorts the problem out (though I know it will happen again) or it causes some horrible error where I eventually need to retstart my computer. It is really, really annoying! I am running with 128 megs RAM on a AMD k-Athlon 550 processor. I am using an Avance 3D Sound card (I don't think it's very good, but it's all I have).

4. And one more silly thing. How do I get the Transport Bar to report playback in Minutes:Seconds:etc instead of Measures:Beats?

There are probably more questions... but I have forgotten them. :)
Anyway, I am sure this is enough to keep you all busy!

Thanks, I appreciate your help!

one I forgot...

How can I take some of the Parts from one of my songs and put them into another song? I have tried to Copy/Paste but you can't have more than one song open at a time, and as soon as I close the first to open the second, the bit I have copied is lost. I can't see an import option (only for MIDI and Audio files). Surely there is a way to get some parts of one song included in another song, besides RE-doing the whole part?

Thanks for any help!

I don't know exactly what cubasis comes with, but for the first fifty questions, it sounds like you might want to upgrade to Cubase (full version). For the parts from one song to another, you should be able to import them as audio files. VST=Virtual Studio Technology. Check the steinberg site for free vst instruments updates, or just do a search on the net, as there are tons of user made plugins and stuff that are free. Generally though, if you want more, you gotta pay more.

i'd love to get the full version of cubase! but that's gonna cost thousands!

cubasis doesn't come with much at all... it really seems like a demo version of cubase.

as for importing audio, i want to import VST instrument parts. so I have to mix them down to audio first? sounds like a bit of a mission!... thanks for your input!:)

Oh!

If they are vst instrument parts, I believe you can import those as midi files as well. Then just activate the instrument you want. There might be an easier way to do this as well, I thought you were talking about audio parts, I don't do alot of midi stuff. I don't know how much you paid for Cubasis in South Africa, but it's only aroung $100 U.S. And you can get the full version for around $300 U.S. If your upgrading, probably less.

prices

yeah, US$300 for the full version... but after the exchange rate and mark-ups, i am looking at a price that is at least 5000 South African rands.

sigh.........................

but i'll see what i can manage.
i am going to try and do a lot more with audio.

cheers!:D

I'm afraid it isn't possible to get more instrument channels. You may get lots of VST (=Virtual Studio Technology)-Instruments at http://www.kvr-vst.com

You're right 2 FX channels isn't enough, but I guess it's limited by Steinberg to get you buying Cubase.... :( Anyway, for FX plugins check VST Central or The PluginList

I don't know a way, but you may check my freeware SampleCalc which can be also used to calculate the length of a song by it's number of measures....

Hope this helps
